No matter how cool a parent you think you are, there’s always a chance that your teen will find you cringe! Yes, even the Bring It On actress couldn’t escape her teen daughter turned tough critic. She was “hurt” and astounded when Zaya, in her interview for Seventeen, shared that she finds her TikTok dances and videos “cringe”! And well, before she could recover, the actress also discovered that she and her husband Dwyane Wade‘s plans for Zaya’s milestone birthday were poles apart.
It’s no secret that the Wades just love parties and going all out for celebrations. Wade’s Hall of Fame party and Union’s birthdays show just that vibe. Even their Thanksgiving get-together was huge. Now, as their beloved daughter Zaya turns 18 in a few months, they had something big and exciting in mind until the 17-year-old shared her thoughts.
Rather than the huge celebrations we see in the Wades’ house, Zaya wants a cozy campfire in the backyard. Shocking? Union could hardly believe it. “She finally had to just tell us the truth! Me and D (Wade) love a party right we love a theme we were throwing these wild big bashes and she’s like ‘I just kind of want to do like. Can we just do like a fake campfire in the backyard and I and me and like two friends want to roast marshmallows?’” Union said with disbelief.
But well, that’s what the child wants! And there’s another birthday gift she’s hoping for. Zaya wants to attend the Grand National tour by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. “Her version of a celebration is a little different (from) ours,” she admitted and added, “But for her 18th she just wants to go see Kendrick Lamar and SZA.”

After the grand Super Bowl halftime performance, which the 17-year-old watched at home, the two artists announced their tour. And it is set to start in April. While speaking about Zaya’s birthday wish, Union mentioned the bond that Zaya shares with SZA.
Gabrielle Union reveals SZA’s kind gesture
This was quite heartwarming and surprising when Union revealed that SZA gave her personal contact number to Zaya. After revealing Zaya’s wish to attend their concert, the actress shared how the artist has an adorable bond with her teen daughter and even shared her number so that she can contact her whenever she wants someone to talk to.
“SZA has been so kind for so many years. I mean with me and with Zaya and she’s given Zaya her personal number to call her whenever (she needs). I think a lot of people don’t get enough credit for who they are when there’s no cameras rolling right,” Union added.
She went on to praise the artist for her thoughtful gesture. No wonder every generation relates to the artists, as they form a meaningful connection with their listeners through music and gestures such as this one! Well, it also shows that no matter how many differences parents have with their children, they always find something in common, and this concert is likely one of them.
