Jenson Brooksby’s journey is a tale of resilience and triumph. Starting tennis at age 4, he hit soft balls against a garage door, igniting a passion that would face numerous challenges. He reached three finals in his journey at Atlanta and Dallas in 2022 and Newport in 2021 but couldn’t win a title. Then he received an 18-month suspension for missed doping tests that kept him off the court from 2023. However, he returned at the Australian Open, sharing his story as a tennis player with Autism that inspired many. Now, he’s achieved a stunning victory, leaving fans in awe!

On Sunday, Brooksby, a qualifying wildcard entrant, defeated second seed and 2023 Houston champ Frances Tiafoe. After saving match points in three matches en route to the title — one in the qualifying first round, three against third seed Alejandro Tabilo in the main-draw second round, and one against top seed Tommy Paul in the semi-finals — Brooksby left no doubt in a brilliant final performance.

With his first ATP trophy on his resume, he became the first American male to win an ATP title of 2025. The kicker? His victory comes during World Autism Month! Tennis journalist shared the news on his X, writing, “Jenson Brooksby has lived with autism his whole life. He was nonverbal until the age of 4 and was diagnosed on the severe end of the spectrum as a child. For him to be a champion on the ATP Tour (in World Autism Month!) is nothing short of extraordinary.”

Jenson couldn’t be happier about his feat. “It means a lot to come away with a title here. I think it’s been the best week of my life, to be honest. You know, I hadn’t won any of my three previous ATP Finals, and those were all three years ago. One of my biggest goals in my comeback was to win my first title,” he said post-match. Seeing him hoist the trophy with a bright smile is heartwarming, knowing the struggle he’s been through to get here. Now, the fans are overjoyed by his triumph!

Fans cheer on Brooksby as he clinches his first title ever

Jenson Brooksby’s story is one of inspiration and perseverance. As one fan noted, “I have always liked this young man. I did not know about his condition until recently. What an inspiration for many young people out there with this same condition. If you could dream it, you could achieve it, no matter who you are.” Diagnosed with autism at a young age, Brooksby faced significant challenges, including being nonverbal until four years old and undergoing intensive therapy.

However, ahead of his return in January, he made the conscious decision to share his experience with autism. “It’s time for me to share something that I have kept quiet for my entire life,” he wrote on Instagram. “I was diagnosed on the severe end of the spectrum as a very young child. I was nonverbal until the age of four. It took 40 hours a week of intensive ABA therapy.” By sharing his story, he aimed to promote understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder.

Another fan pointed out, “Whatever it is, the kid can play.” His final against Tiafoe was pure magic! Frances erased Brooksby’s early lead, drawing level at 4-4, but Brooksby quickly regained control, winning eight of the last ten games. He clinched the first set with a stunning pickup volley and broke for 4-2 in the second with a backhand passing shot. Brooksby converted five of six break points, improving his head-to-head against Tiafoe to 3-0.

Considering the challenges he faced, one fan expressed, “Truly amazing, I have so much respect for Jenson, took his ban from those who is truly unfair, came back and won this trophy. Super proud of him and anyone living with ASD. You have super powers, respect! ” Last year, he was banned after missing three doping tests. Initially given an 18-month ban, Brooksby’s ban was reduced by 10 months by the ITIA. Alongside this, he underwent arthroscopic surgery on both of his wrists in a three-month span in 2023 and hadn’t played since the Australian Open in 2023.

His achievements are not just about his personal triumphs but also about the broader impact he has on the tennis world. A fan suggested, “Tennis media should cover him a lot more. What he’s been doing and achieving is remarkable.” Being a player with autism is no small feat. While he has worked with psychologists for years, his focus and determination are truly inspiring. His psychologist, Michelle Wagner, highlighted that his diagnosis will not stand in his way.

Speaking to L’ Equipe, she said, “You know, autism can be a strength too. For most of us, thoughts can come and go in an instant, or they can disappear. But for someone like him, on the court, there’s only one thing that exists, the rest is completely locked. His focus is absolute.”

Lastly, the significance of Brooksby’s achievements cannot be overstated. As one fan noted, “after everything he’s been through, this is so important 🩷.” The 24-year-old has overcome injuries, surgeries, and a doping ban to get here. He was ranked No. 507 at the beginning of the week and won seven consecutive matches to claim his first ATP Tour title in Houston. Who knows what’s next for this young star!
