“You Are Worse Than Leon”- Colby Covington Gets Humiliated by Fans After Leon Edwards Assessment

6 min read

Colby Covington deriding Leon Edwards for being on a losing streak? That’s just the pot calling the kettle black. And the evident irony of his statement has put Covington in the hot seat among the fan community. For the unversed, Leon Edwards submitted to Sean Brady in front of a home crowd at UFC London after one of the most lopsided beatings in recent history. Never one to waste an opportunity to rub off of someone’s spotlight, ‘Chaos’ swooped in with his chaotic take.

During his appearance on Submission Radio on 25 March 2025, the first topic that Covington was asked to talk about was Edwards’ submission defeat at the hands of Brady. ‘Chaos’ has already fought Edwards once at UFC 296 and lost via a unanimous decision (49-46 on all three judges’ scorecards) after a dominant performance from the former champion. However, he considered himself to be “high-flying”, doing big things while “jobbers” like ‘Rocky’ continued to lose. But then, Denis Shkuratov asked if ‘Chaos’ actually knew beforehand that Edwards was going to lose. Having fought the former welterweight champion before, Covington revealed that he felt like ‘Rocky’ didn’t have any motivation left in him.

According to him, it was high time for Edwards to hang up his gloves for good. He said, “I kind of thought that after I fought Leon, the motivation wasn’t there anymore. I mean, I could tell in the fight. I broke my foot immediately and he did nothing. He didn’t try and come after me. He just tried to point-coast to a decision. So, I could tell after that fight, he just wasn’t hungry anymore. I made him too much money at that press conference. So, I just don’t think he’s motivated anymore. He should hang ’em up.”

Well, after defending his belt for the second time at UFC 296, the Jamaican-born welterweight lost against Belal Muhammad via a unanimous decision at UFC 304. Within 8 months, he fought again and was forced to tap out at UFC London. Not only did he lose the fight, but he also lost his position as the #1 welterweight contender. Not to mention, this was the first time that Edwards was finished in his career.

So does Covington have a point? Is this the beginning of the end for ‘Rocky’? Look at his last two fights. The revered English striker was effectively nullified by Belal Muhammad at UFC 304. The Palestinian-American star tactfully mixed his striking and wrestling to steal the belt away. Although Edwards cut him open with an elbow in the final minutes, it was too little, too late. But the script flipped entirely on its head this past weekend at UFC London.

Sean Brady was smaller in stature but came into the fight with a bigger heart. In round two, Edwards landed zero significant strikes. Zero! That’s how well Brady tamed ‘Rocky’ on the ground. In the fourth, Edwards tried to take down the Philly native, a move he must now be regretting. Why would he shoot a takedown on the guy who was clearly outclassing him on the mat? Well, because Brady was outclassing him on the feet too, landing cleaner combinations and with devilish quickness. Never before had the fans seen Edwards outclassed to this extent.

But when Submission Radio shared Colby Covington’s words on Instagram, the fighting community could not overlook the irony. Fight fans took to the comments section to reveal their thoughts. Let’s see what they had to say.

Colby Covington receives backlash for dissing Leon Edwards

If Edwards’ performance means he should consider retirement, where does that leave Covington? That’s what the fans wanted to know. Most netizens pointed out the outcome of UFC 296. If Covington was better than Leon Edwards, he should have won the bout, right? Why did he end up getting outstruck and outgrappled by the Englishman? Not to mention all the hits below the belt at the pre-fight presser, where Covington dragged Edwards’ deceased father into the mix.

On top of that, ‘Rocky’ had already been a champion of the welterweight division with two successful title defenses. One of the fans reflected on this and wrote, “Colby buddy you are worse than Leon , atleast he was champ .” Another fan wrote, “He still beat you, dunce cap. ” One of the fans decided to address Covington’s last few bouts. Currently, ‘Chaos’, just like ‘Rocky’ was on a 2-fight losing streak. On top of that, Covington has lost 4 of his last 6 bouts and he is 0-3 in title bouts. The fan commented, “colby giving him s— after losing 4-1 is a new low .”

The repercussions continued, and the fans claimed that both the welterweights were way past their prime. One fan commented, “Both washed… a new era of Welterweight is upon us and NEITHER of these guys are gonna be in the top 10 come next year.” Another fan wrote, “Both Leon and Colby aren’t hungry anymore. Both going to get sparked in their next fights!”

Well, that statement might partially be true. Covington is 37, and for those of you who know the sport well enough, fighters that are 35 years or above, at welterweight or weight classes below that, usually go on the decline. This spells more trouble for Colby than it does for the 33-year-old Leon. With young blood like Ian Garry and Shavkat Rakhmonov chomping at the bits, guys like Colby and Leon are going to have a run for their money to stay at the top.

However, there were a few fight fans who agreed with the former interim champion. One fan claimed, “He’s not lying that performance simply showed he’s not getting better and he’s not as hungry as.” Meanwhile, another fan took a subtle jibe at ‘Chaos’ while agreeing with him. The comment read, “He’s right and wrong, he got beat but at the same time Leon seemed to have Colby at his mercy and chose to cruise to a decision.”

What do you think of Covington’s words for Edwards? Do you think Edwards has lost his hunger for power in the welterweight realm? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
