Yankees Star Gets Candid on His Future After Costly Error vs Blue Jays Fuels Trade Talk

4 min read

What’s common these days in the Bronx? The errors! And last night, it happened again. The Yankees fell apart in a disappointing 4–1 loss against the Blue Jays. When the dust settled, it was evident that this wasn’t just another loss. It added to the chatter about deadline trades.

The momentum that seemed ready to shift to the Yankees instead went to the Blue Jays. Courtesies? The defensive breakdown in the fifth inning. Off Carlos Rodon’s pitch, Myles Straw hit a ground ball to the hot corner and reached base because of a throwing error. That let Bo Bichette, who was already on 2B, run home and put Toronto ahead 3–1.

The Yankees eventually lost the game 1-4. And with that, they are now at 55–45, sitting second in the AL East. The player under the microscope for the error is Oswald Peraza. In the post-game interview with the YES Network, he was asked what exactly went wrong, and he responded through an interpreter.

“I rushed through the sequence of defending that ball. I noticed that the runner was running very well. First base position … wasn’t the best and it cost us,”  Peraza said. Well, the Yankees’ errors are now leading to losses, increasing the urgency to trade as the deadline approaches. It’s no secret, 3B is a position that the front office is actively looking for.

So, the reporter further questioned Peraza about trade talks as he struggles on the diamond. He replied, “I have always tried to focus on the work and things that I can control… I understand the numbers are not exactly where I want them to be, but I trust the work and keep doing it every day. As far as trades and things like that… you have to focus on what you are doing on a daily basis and focus on the things you can control.”

That error against Toronto doesn’t paint a complete picture of Peraza’s struggles this season. He has been struggling at the plate, too (.150/.212/.242 slash line).

Recently, Jon Heyman of the New York Post said that the Yankees are one of the teams that want the D-backs third baseman, Eugenio Suárez. But if in any case he slips away, the front office has its eyes locked on two of the Pirates’ players as well — Ke’Bryan Hayes, a Golden Glove infielder, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a utility player.

Against Toronto, though, Peraza’s error wasn’t the only costly error the Yanks made. Their shortstop Anthony Volpe made another error, and it was his 12th of the season.

The Yankees’ defensive collapse against the Blue Jays

While Oswald Peraza’s throwing error let Bo Bichette score, Anthony Volpe made things worse for the Yankees’ defense in the same inning. The Bombers were already in trouble when Volpe hurried a throw to first that knocked Paul Goldschmidt off the bag. This let another run and gave the Blue Jays a lead of 4-1.

This was Volpe’s 12th error of the year, which tied him with Jonathan India of Kansas City for the most in the American League.

After the game, Volpe said, “I rushed the throw and pulled it and gave Goldy a tough pick to handle.” The 24-year-old, who earned a Gold Glove in 2023, made 16 errors last season in more than 1,400 innings, which suddenly seems small compared to how many errors he has made this season in less than 850 innings.

Aaron Boone, the manager of the Yankees, didn’t hold back while talking about the team’s defensive mistakes. ” We’ve got to play better,” he remarked, calling poor defense a contributor to the team “not finishing off some games.”

Continuing further, the skipper added: “It’s been a month now where we haven’t been at our best. We need to start playing better consistently, putting wins in the win column. That’s all we can really worry about.”
