Yankees Eugenio Suárez Snub Sparks $260M Star’s Surge in Stunning Trade Deadline Twist

4 min read

Eugenio Suárez was the name that flew through the rumor mill like a fireworks show in the frantic hours before the MLB trade deadline. Everyone, from the Yankees’ front office to other general managers, was talking about him because he had been hitting the ball hard all year. But when the Yankees opted not to sign him and pursued another third baseman instead, the deadline story took an unexpected turn.

It started out as a race for power and a need to make the playoffs. And Eugenio Suárez has become the most valuable player at this trade deadline. Almost every club was circling him, from the Cubs to the Phillies and the Yankees. However, the Yankees’ focus shifted by signing Ryan McMahon. Suddenly, a new veteran third baseman was the center of attention.

Now, as per MLB writer Mark Feinsand, “The Yankees jumped the market with their trade for Ryan McMahon, but Suárez remains the crown jewel of this Trade Deadline, with the Cubs, Mariners, Tigers, Brewers, Reds, Astros and Phillies all interested in the slugger to varying degrees.”

Feinsand further added: “But another third baseman could fill one of those holes, as sources said Nolan Arenado – who was at the center of multiple trade talks during the offseason.”

Nolan Arenado is an eight-time All-Star but this season he has struggled at the plate. In 94 games in 2025, he had a batting average of around .235/.295/.368 with 10 home runs and roughly 43 RBIs. He was also an outstanding fielder, ranking in the 89th percentile for outs over average. And his contract also adds an interesting point.

He has an eight-year, $260 million agreement, and $42 million is still outstanding over two seasons—$27 million in 2026 and $15 million in 2027.

Meanwhile, Eugenio Suárez is having a great year in 2025. He leads the league with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs. Suarez smashed four home runs in one game in April and has been on fire lately, with a .325 average and a 1.220 OPS over the last 32 games. He’s a strong player at the plate and still a good trade piece.

So, how did Arenado surge into trade conversations? Well, it’s very simple. A lot of teams are interested in Suarez, but if they can’t get him, they might be willing to switch to Arenado. That pivot ability made him go from being a second-tier option to a leading figure overnight.

Now, with the trade deadline just around the corner, it will be an interesting watch to see where it will go. For Arenado, no such team has shown interest yet. But for Suarez, the Phillies might want to add him with an injury to their 3B.

Phillies might court Eugenio Suárez amid Bohm injury

The Philadelphia Phillies are quickly becoming a strong candidate to sign Eugenio Suárez. The clubhouse is said to have talked about trading with the Diamondbacks because their third baseman, Alec Bohm, broke a rib. Scouts were even observed watching the Phillies’ top prospect, Mick Abel, in Triple-A.

However, Suárez gives the Phillies the right-handed power they need between Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. It will make their lineup even stronger for now. With an OPS of .904, he is one of the best batters available as the deadline approaches.

When Bohm comes back, adding Suárez would create a logjam at the position. And to make room for both, Harper or Schwarber would probably move to the outfield. That being said, the people in charge of the Phillies are notorious for making big deals, so if the price is right, they may make it happen.

The possible move of Eugenio Suárez to Philadelphia might have a big effect on trades all over the league. If the Phillies make a move, it may change the course of Arenado and other third base targets. What do you think?
