“Teams are expressing interest; they’re continually doing that.” The White Sox general manager, Chris Getz, sounds confident about Luis Robert Jr’s trading opportunities. It’s surprising considering how Robert is battling injuries and inconsistency this season. Still, if whispers around the league are to be believed, the trade buzz is real. Powerhouses like the Yankees and Phillies are reportedly among the suitors pursuing the struggling slugger.
Well, the 2023 All-Star and Silver Slugger is currently on a tough season at the plate. He is slashing just .181/.265/.281 with five home runs and 25 RBIs. Although this number has now improved after the game against the Astros, it is still on the lower end. But even after that suitors continue to find value in Robert.
It is mainly his defensive prowess in the field and baserunning skills. For starters, Robert’s elite speed has translated into 21 stolen bases, ranking him among the league leaders. His glove work also remains top-tier. So, while the bat hasn’t come alive yet, his impact on the bases and in the field offers a ray of hope.
“Luis Robert Jr. continues to draw attention as a potential trade piece,” MLB insider Francys Romero said. “Teams like the Yankees, Mariners, and Phillies are expected to be in the conversation ahead of the trade deadline, according to industry sources.”

Considering the 31st July trade deadline, the Yankees and Phillies are considered the frontrunners in getting Robert.
If the Yankees were to acquire Luis Robert Jr., he would likely have to compete with current center fielder Trent Grisham. Grisham has been relatively productive, slashing .240/.344/.481 with 13 home runs and 27 RBIs through 56 games heading into Tuesday. So, for the Yankees, they will get Robert’s upside defense and Grisham’s offensive output on the basepaths.
For the Phillies, Luis Robert Jr. could be a valuable fit alongside Trea Turner. He could offer a dynamic right-handed presence behind the power duo of Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. The Phillies would also like to get Robert to bring speed and defense to the outfield.
Hence, a blockbuster trade is anticipated from here for Robert, and for the White Sox, they are looking to have their lineup filled in exchange. But if this trade materializes, the Bronx Bombers might face a conundrum.
Positional dilemma for the Yankees
While Trent Grisham’s centerfield position might be the best for Robert, the Yankees would still face a few challenges.
With Giancarlo Stanton reportedly set to begin his minor league rehab assignment at Double-A, the Yankees face a looming roster puzzle. Any move to acquire Robert would undoubtedly bolster their offensive firepower, but it also presents a dilemma. The Yankees’ outfield is already crowded with high-profile names like Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger. So, Stanton’s return only complicates matters further.
Hence, finding room for Robert without disrupting the rhythm of current contributors will be a challenge.
Also, not to forget the red flags surrounding Luis Robert. According to the FanGraphs metric, among 202 hitters with at least 450 plate appearances this season, Robert ranks near the bottom in several key offensive metrics. So, for a player with elite tools, the lack of consistent zone control remains a glaring issue. Something that could limit his effectiveness even in a lineup as deep as the Yankees.
The trade deadline is coming soon, and the Yankees’ front office must make calculated decisions. They need to balance potential upgrades with the functionality of the current roster. But the question remains whether Robert’s upside justifies the positional shuffle for the team.
