Will Jamie Benn Get Suspended for Mark Scheifele Punch? Dallas Stars Player Could Lose Double-Digit Figure Ahead of Game 6

4 min read

The 2025 Presidents’ Trophy winners managed to show just why they were the league toppers going into the postseason. Thanks to Connor Hellebuyck‘s 22 saves, the Winnipeg Jets bagged a thumping 4-0 win over the Dallas Stars at home. With that, the top seed of the league has avoided elimination and forced the series to go to Game 6. However, while Dallas didn’t manage to score a goal, Jamie Benn still managed to land a ‘shot’ that sent shockwaves across the NHL community.

The Stars went to the Canada Life Center leading the best-of-seven game series 3-1 and hoping to wrap things up without further deliberation. However, the hosts had entirely different plans and shut out the visitors despite Jake Oettinger making an incredible 31 saves for the Stars. Maybe it was that frustration that got under Jamie Benn’s skin. But what will the Dallas captain face as repercussions for his actions?

Mark Scheifele gave the Jets the lead in the second period when his pass to the slot took two deflections off two Stars’ players and went flying past Oettinger. Apparently, Benn hadn’t taken it lightly. During a scrum late in the third period, Jamie landed a sucker punch on the Jets’ forward, earning himself a 10-minute misconduct penalty. Along with that, speculations are going on hinting that the Stars’ star could also be facing suspension ahead of Game 6. A post on X by Empty Netters from May 15 notes, “Jamie Benn might be getting a call tomorrow!!

During the skirmish, Benn’s punch knocked over both Scheifele and an NHL official, linesman Ryan Daisy, who was trying to hold Scheifele back. With that, the series finally became heated. But the Stars’ coach, Pete DeBoer, thinks this is all part of the game, especially when the stakes are high. “It’s an emotional series. You play this time of year against one team and there gets to be a little bit of hate out there. That’s OK,” DeBoer told reporters.

However, while the coach claimed that such moments are what make the game interesting, the NHL has a very different approach when it comes to ensuring fair play. In addition to the minor roughing penalty he received during the game today, Jamie Benn could also be fined a hefty sum. As per the official NHL website, “Players may be fined up to 50% of one day’s average salary without exceeding $10,000 for the first fine and $15,000 for any subsequent fines within a 12 month calendar period.

Now, considering that the Dallas forward hasn’t had any such issue raised against him before today in the playoffs, he is likely to walk away from the whole mess by paying the lower amount. But would that be all?

What more could befall Jamie Benn along with the fine?

As per The Morning Sun, Benn could also face a suspension for Game 6, slated for Saturday at the American Airlines Center. But even so, the Jets will need to buckle up. Scott Arniel’s boys don’t have a great away record this postseason, and heading into Dallas, they post a poor 0-5 record on the road. Obviously, some planning is in order even if Jamie doesn’t get to lace up on the weekend.

To make matters worse, Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen also recently made his return to the ice after being out for 32 regular season and 10 playoff games, thanks to an injury he picked up against the Vegas Golden Knights in late January. If that wasn’t enough, Hellebuyck‘s antics from Game 3 still haven’t left the Jets’ fans’ memories, and they would pray that the netminder doesn’t fumble in the match that could decide Winnipeg’s postseason campaign.

The potentially decisive match will return to Dallas, where Stars fans gathered in throngs for both Games 3 and 4 to help the home team bag massive wins. Moreover, both Mikko Rantanen and Mikael Granlund have been in stellar form, and the Jets need to approach their next game with caution. All these considered, how will Scott Arniel respond, even if Jamie Benn isn’t in the Stars’ lineup? We’ll have to wait to see!
