All eyes on Boston! On Thursday, Team USA and Canada will clash for a second time within a week in a bid to win the inaugural 4 Nations championship game at the home of the Boston Bruins. The international hockey tournament has been intense so far, and the stakes are even higher for the finale. Naturally, the USA’s general manager Bill Guerin wants all the support he can amass for the big rumble ahead.
On Saturday’s match between the neighboring nations in Montreal, the American team and the USA’s national anthem were booed heavily by the attending fans. So much so, that it got under the skin of several players who got into three separate fistfights within the first seconds of the game. And all of that happened with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau in the stands of the Bell Centre. And now, as the US team looks for a stout payback in their backyard, the 2013 USA Hockey Hall of Fame inductee wants Trudeau’s American counterpart to witness the moment. But will Donald Trump agree to be a part of the spectacle?
The USA GM makes an earnest appeal to Donald Trump before the 4 Nations championship bout
On February 18, columnist Clinton Desveaux shared some “BREAKING HOCKEY NEWS” via a post on X. Accompanied by a short Fox News clip, the post reads, “American hockey team coach Bill Guerin tells FoxNews he wants President Trump at 4 Nation final against Canada,” while also highlighting how Guerin claimed that the ongoing political tension between the two countries is acting as a catalyst for the American athletes to want to dish out their best on the ice at the 4 Nations championship match.

“We would love it if President Trump was in attendance. We have a room full of proud American players and coaches and staff and listen, we’re just trying to represent our country the best way we can,” the Minnesota Wild and Team USA GM could be heard saying in the attached video. When asked if it was bad blood between the two teams, the booing of the anthem, or the political tension between the two countries that was responsible for the intensity of the match on Saturday, Guerin said, “I think a little bit of everything.” “I mean, Canada-U.S. is a huge rivalry in hockey. I think there was a little bit of a political flair to it. It’s just the time that we’re in. And then I think our guys use that as inspiration,” the USA GM added.

Could the President be among the eager fans at TD Garden?
Truth be told, President Trump’s presence could be a statement. Team USA faced harsh treatment, to put things lightly, on the other side of the border during the first portion of the round-robin. On two back-to-back nights, The Star Spangled Banner was met with hostility, which many claimed was a reaction by the Canadians to Trump’s decision to levy taxes on Canadian products. But whatever the political situation may be, Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk, and J.T. Miller’s decision to take the fight to their opponents (literally) added more flair to Saturday’s first match between the hockey heavyweights and created all the more hype around the 4 Nations championship battle.
On the other hand, history was made last week at the Caesars Superdome when President Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl match. Trump, along with his daughter Ivanka and son Eric, watched the match between Philadelphia and Kansas City, with a mixed reaction from the crowds. However, considering how the USA was booed in Canada, one could speculate it won’t be as mixed of a reaction from the fans at Thursday’s 4 Nations championship match.
It’ll be interesting to see if Donald Trump indeed accepts Guerin’s invite and jumps into the thick of things. But one thing’s for sure: if the President does attend the 4 Nations championship match, it will add a whole new layer to the game that will surely go down as historic on its own. What do you think?
