Do you remember how two months ago, the PGA Tour pros donned yellow ribbons at the 2025 Memorial Tournament? It was about Jack Nicklaus, his legacy, and a tragic friendship he shared with Craig Smith, the son of Barbara Nicklaus’s minister, who died of Ewing sarcoma. The Memorial Tournament’s so-called ‘Play Yellow’ movement helped raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Now, it’s happening again, but at the BMW Championship.
This time, though, the color is pink. But it’s still for a good cause. At the BMW Championship, PGA Tour pros are rocking pink ribbons to amp up awareness for breast cancer – and it’s a big deal. According to a UN report from February, if things keep trending like they are, we’ll be looking at 3.2 million new breast cancer cases and 1.1 million deaths yearly by mid-century. Low- and middle-income countries are going to feel the brunt of it hardest, where early detection, treatment, and care are tough to come by.
So, this comes at an essential point. But the pros and the fans were also rocking another set of colors during the week, and for a completely different reason.
The 2025 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland is paying tribute to the state’s strong military ties. The week’s festivities honoring America’s armed forces kicked off with a special opening ceremony on Thursday on the first tee. Local talent Jami Saval, a native of Owings Mills, belted out the national anthem – Saval’s got experience doing the same for the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles.
On the occasion, the fans were urged to rock red, white, and blue.
This is a developing story…
