That is why they do what they do for me defensively. They play their guts out defensively.”

While many credit Holly for her husband’s ascent to being a veteran defensive guru and recruiter, Holly herself has never taken the full credit. She shared in 2012 how age and wisdom are the two stepping stones of Vic’s success. This mutual respect for each other has been a cornerstone of their 30-year marriage. She played for Mississippi State under Vic, helping lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back national title game appearances in 2017 and 2018. Her defensive grit earned her SEC All-Defensive Team honors as a senior, along with the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

After graduating, she briefly pursued broadcasting with ESPN and the SEC Network, but felt unfulfilled. Reflecting on the same, she once shared, “It was hard for me to tell him (Vic) because he had been telling me for years I should coach. When I finally had to tell him, … he was so excited.”

Vic’s also talked about their dynamic. “At practice, I was always ‘Coach’ and not ‘Dad,’ but whenever Blair went home for family dinners… I’d ask her, ‘How was Coach today?’ and she’d say, ‘Well, he was in a pretty good mood, we had a big win yesterday,” he said. After Texas’ latest deep tournament run, she posted, “Elite year. Elite company”. And when it comes to family, she keeps it simple: “My people ” she wrote on Instagram, sharing a moment of love and appreciation for those who mean the most.

Then there’s Logan—whose journey is one of sheer resilience. At just 14, he suffered a traumatic head injury in a wakeboarding accident that left him in a coma. Doctors weren’t sure what his future held, but Logan fought his way back, relearning how to walk, talk, and eat. His determination carried him through, and he went on to graduate from Mississippi State in 2017 before earning a master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M.

Now based in Austin, Logan works as a sales representative while pursuing his love for country music. He’s even performed in a band back in Starkville, with his dad often in the crowd, beaming with pride.

The Schaefers’ bond is always on full display, whether it’s Blair coaching alongside Vic, Logan chasing his dreams, or Holly being the glue that holds it all together. Last Mother’s Day, Vic took a moment to celebrate the woman at the heart of their family, posting on X: “Celebrating a Happy Mother’s Day today with the point guard of our family ⁦@holly_schaefer⁩. Always a very special day for our family. And giving thanks for my mother & all she did for me and our family back when I was way younger. Don’t remember Mom ever having a bad day.”
