Who Is Jared Jones? Everything to Know About LSU’s Baseball Star

4 min read

When Jared Jones goes up to bat for LSU, his name echoes around. Hitting with an average of .322 this year, with every swing, he ensures it is impossible to look away. But while he shines on at the plate, behind the scenes lies a story of family values, a strong work ethic, and a desire to break through his own ceiling.

When not swinging at Tiger Stadium, Jared spends his mornings at the batting cage, reviewing performances and conversing with coaches to improve. His hard work has now paid off—he has been selected to the NCBWA first team. But how has his journey been?

Who is Jared Jones? All you need to know about him, his family and more

Marietta, Georgia, known for its historic charm, was where Jared Jones was born on August 1, 2003. He carries an athlete’s DNA. Jared’s dad, George Jones, played football at Georgia and was a college athlete. He knows the grind never stops, and excellence takes time.

Jared’s nickname, the one you hear when he steps up to the plate came from his mother, Michelle Jones, who used to lovingly call him “Jare Bear.”  Well, Jared has a lovely family, with three sisters and one brother, who has supported his journey to LSU right throughout.

Since arriving at LSU, Jared has experienced significant growth, evolving from a promising prospect into a true college superstar. When he is not on the field, he can be found studying sports administration at LSU. Not only that, but he is also engaged in a great social cause in a partnership with Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana. As per this, he will donate $100 every time he hits a home run this season.

Jared is balancing it all very nicely, from his studies to his defensive game, and his social initiatives as well. He went from a promising talent to a top power-hitting first baseman at LSU. And he is now becoming a top prospect for a first-round pick for the 2025 MLB Draft.

A look at his college career: What makes Jared Jones a high prized asset?

With each day, Jared Jones is just getting better. He had a .411 batting average, hit 15 home runs, and won several MVP awards in Perfect Game competitions in the class of 2022. Astonishing! Scouts liked his bat speed, how quickly he could accelerate in swing mechanics, and how well he played defense, especially behind the plate at first.

At LSU, his natural talent turned into college dominance. He swiftly moved to 1B, showing off not just his muscles, but also his smooth hands, steady feet, and natural baseball IQ. These three things made him a key player on the squad.

However, like every other player, Jared also had his equal share of ups and downs. Once when he was going through a rough patch, he had an interesting conversation. No, not with his coach or his parents. But it’s with the MLB star Paul Skenes. Jared often recalls that with a lot of enthusiasm.

“Why are you hitting off a tee?” Skenes told Jared, as he struggled at the plate. “I don’t know, just trying to get my mind off things,” Jared responded.

Skenes then highlighted his own rookie struggles: “Do you know who I played my first college game against? … You know what my stat line was that weekend? … 0 for 11, nine Ks.”

The short talk with Skenes taught Jared two lessons: everyone faces tough beginnings, and how you respond defines you.  His numbers afterwards show he responded well.

Jared’s last performance against UCLA was class. He hit a three-run homer that gave LSU a 4-3 lead. The game was postponed due to bad weather conditions, but Jared still made an impact. And in the stands, you know, who was cheering? Paul Skenes, along with his girlfriend.

Jared’s raw power has helped him get to no. 3 in LSU’s all time list of career home runs. With 62 career home runs, he is now behind only Brad Cresse (78 HR) and Eddy Furniss (80 HR).

At LSU, Jared has steadily increased his slugging and on-base percentages while keeping strikeouts low. In 2025, his batting average is a solid .322, and his slugging percentage exceeds .600—figures that cannot go unnoticed.

When the MLB Draft Day 2025 comes, a lot of teams will move quickly for Jared. But no matter where he ends up, one thing is for sure, he will set the stage ablaze.
