How many of you saw that coming? Columbia’s Camila Osorio stuns the former world number one Naomi Osaka in the first round of the 2025 BNP Paribas Open. With this win over the 2018 champion, Osorio has now become the first Columbian woman to beat a former world number one. What a moment for this 23-year-old girl from Cucuta, Colombia! Her incredible performance reminds us of her line, “Sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone so you can be a champion.” Have you ever heard of this name before? If not, let’s find out more about this young Colombian tennis sensation.

Born on 22 December 2001, Camila Osorio is the granddaughter of the former Colombian national soccer player Rolando Serrano. He had even represented Colombia at the 1962 World Cup. Sports run in her blood! Her father, Carlos, and her brother, Sebastian, have played soccer professionally. Even her mother, Adriana, was a basketball player. They’re so much into sports that they even have their family dogs named Neymar and Messi! However, Osorio’s love for the racket sport started at a very young age. She even had to leave her hometown for the Club Med academy in Florida at the age of 11.

Talking about her success, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano was just 17 years old when she won the 2019 US Open in the girls’ single category. At the junior level, she even reached the SF of the French Open in the same year. Later on, she even peaked at number one on the ITF World Junior rankings. Not only that, Osorio also has a bronze medal in the girls’ singles and a silver medal in the mixed doubles event at the Summer Youth Olympics (2018).

She made her WTA 1000 debut at the 2021 BNP Paribas Open. The 2021 season was quite special for this young Colombian, as she also won her first WTA title in Bogota in the same season. She also made her Top 100 entry. In that same season, she was seen embracing her mother, Adriana, after beating Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya by 1-6,6-0,6-4 in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships. She reached the third round of the major tournament that year, and to date, it’s her best record at any Grand Slam event.

Owning to her incredible performance in the previous season, she reached a career-high ranking of number 33 on 4 April 2022 (currently, she ranks 53rd in the world). After that, in 2023, Camila Osorio clinched her second Top 10 win against Carolina Garcia in the third round of the Italian Open. Her first Top 10 came against Elina Svitloina in the first round of the 2021 Tenerife Open. Her steady progress in the women’s Tour has now made her the talk of the town. She clinched her second WTA title at the Bogota Open in 2024.

Known as ‘Cami’ to her close ones, she shortened her long name to just Camila Osorio in 2021. Growing up in a country where soccer is the most popular sport, how did Camila Osorio find her love for tennis? Who was her tennis idol? In reply to this question, she once revealed that Roger Federer was his tennis idol. “He is my idol. I looked for him in Wimbledon. One day, I saw him, and I cried. I took two pictures with him. In one of them, I still have tears on my face.” What did Osorio say after beating one of the biggest stars in women’s tennis, though?

“Dream come true” – Camila Osorio introduces herself to the tennis world with an emphatic victory over the former world number one

Both Camila Osorio and Naomi Osaka were making returns to the court after staying away from action for over a month. The Japanese star was seen withdrawing from both the ASB Classic final and the R3 match at the AO due to some injury issues. On the other hand, Osorio also had to withdraw her name from the Merida main draw due to an abdominal injury.

Naomi Osaka had previously defeated Camila Osorio in the first round of the 2022 AO. So beating her by a 6-4,6-4 margin in just 1 hour and 31 minutes was more like fulfilling her revenge against the four-time Grand Slam champion. What did she say after this match, though? Well, shortly after hitting her forehand winner into the open court, the Colombian was seen celebrating her victory with a bit of dancing. Then, during the on-court interview, she was asked to share her thoughts on how it feels to become the first Colombian to beat a former world number one.

First, good evening everyone. I’m Camila Osorio. It’s crazy for me, it’s a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court and was really excited and looking forward to playing a champion like Naomi, so I can’t believe it,” said Osorio. She will next take on Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the second round of the 2025 Indian Wells Masters. How far do you think she can go in this tournament?
