Marchand was born on May 17th, 2002, in Toulouse and comes from a family of decorated athletes. His father is Xavier Marchand, who was a former world silver medallist and Olympian, and his mother, Céline Bonnet, is a French record-holder.
Xavier former world silver medallist in the 200 m IM (Perth 1998) and two-time Olympian. He also finished 8th in Atlanta 1996 and 7th in Sydney 2000. Between them, his parents have three Olympic appearances, and they aren’t the only ones. Christophe Marchand, Leon’s uncle, also contested in the 1988 and 1992 Games in distance events.
Xavier trained at Auburn and supported Leon’s move to Arizona State University (ASU). He also expressed parental caution and pride about Leon’s fame. Leon Marchand is a world record holder (in the 400m IM), multiple-time world champion, and NCAA record holder. However, his parents had discouraged him from the sport previously. Yet, swimming was his calling, and Leon owned it!
Who Is Leon Marchand’s Mother, Celine Bonnet?
Celine Bonnet is a former French national record-holder and Olympian from 1992, competing in multiple IM and backstroke events. She started teaching Leon about swimming discipline early on—both parents expressed initial caution about the sport’s pressure on athletes. Leon’s parents have three Olympic appearances between them with his mother Celine made her Olympic debut at Barcelona 1992 when she was just 16 years old.
Celine had represented France in three individual events — the 100m backstroke, 200m individual medley, and 400m individual medley. Her fastest finish came in the 200m individual medley, where she came in 14th place.
Celine also competed in the 4×100m medley relay, with France finishing 14th.
She also accompanied him to U.S. collegiate meets in support. She was not too keen on him starting the swimming career though. Celine told Swimming World: “We told him, no, don’t do swimming, it’s too hard. No holidays, every day.” But clearly, swimming was in his blood, and he proved that he had received greatness from his parents.

Leon has one younger brother, Oscar, and he swam at the local Toulouse club, but later on, he quit. While he is not an elite-level athlete, Oscar’s presence added to the family’s sporting environment growing up.
