“I’m going to be a champion because I’m the toughest, and nothing can surprise me.” This is what Kevin Borjas said in his DWCS promo to assert his mindset while aiming to be the best. The Peruvian was always determined and just needed a bit of luck to get started. The UFC has always been a hotbed for fighters from humble beginnings, and Borjas’s life story is also no exception. Borjas, at 5’5” tall with a reach of 68 inches, currently competes in the flyweight division.

The 9-3-1 fighter earned his place in the UFC after a decision victory over Victor Dias on Dana White’s Contender Series after impressive outings in the Peruvian MMA promotion Inka FC. Although he has faced two consecutive losses in the UFC, he is determined to get back in the win column against Ronaldo Rodriguez at UFC Mexico. In this article, we will take a step back from his fighting career and focus on where it all began! We are going to explore how he wanted to learn boxing, his ethnicity, nationality, and the religion he practices.

Is Kevin Borjas from Peru? Ethnicity and nationality

Kevin Borjas’s nationality is Peruvian as he comes from Lima, Peru, and he lives in a district called Barranco. As far as ethnicity goes, he has never discussed that in public. The population of Peru is comprised of mainly two groups: Mestizos and Amerindians. Mestizos’ ethnicity is a mix of European and Amerindian ancestry. Meanwhile, Amerindians are an amalgamation of the ethnicity of the indigenous peoples of Peru. This includes Quechua, Aymara, and various Amazonian tribes. So, it can be said that Borjas can be either of these ethnicities.

The Barranco district, where Barjos is from, is one of the 43 districts in Peru, which is famous for being more romantic and bohemian than others. The city represents itself as a Paradise on Earth but the 27-year-old Peruvian’s beginning was not a bed of roses. He fought through many hardships before he had the opportunity to fight on the largest stage of martial arts.

Barjos started dreaming about being a mixed martial artist after seeing Bruce Lee in movies when he was just twelve years old. Education became distasteful, but doing something in sports was always an option for him. Moreover, he was athletic from a very young age. He never wanted to pursue other sports like Soccer, because he was so in love with boxing and martial arts in general.

Unfortunately, his family discouraged him from starting his career in MMA. Not because they didn’t want to see their kid become a future combat sports star. But they actually couldn’t afford to go ahead with his desired career due to financial difficulties. Soon, he met a karate instructor which eventually led him to discover Muay Thai. In a Spanish podcast called Plus 51, Borjas shared his story about getting lost after his MMA debut.

“I was 15 years old when I made my MMA debut, then I dedicated my life to living the life of a cholo, because I missed 2 years of my career because I got lost. I dedicated my life to stopping with friends from the neighborhood and I already done bad things, I totally lost myself. After some time, I felt, no, I don’t belong there with them.”

Discussing how to overcome hardships in life, Borjas is a resilient man with a strong personality, able to recover from the challenges he faces. But what are his personal religious beliefs? Let’s find out.

Which religion does Kevin Borjas follow?

Throughout his MMA career, Kevin Borjas has never been asked about his religion, nor has he disclosed his beliefs. However, in a DWCS promo video, the Peruvian fighter indicated that he believes in God. The 125fer did not specify which God he believed in, as people of his ethnicity may worship different deities.

While Catholicism is the dominant religion among the people of his nationality, there is also a significant presence of Protestantism, along with a syncretism of Catholic and indigenous beliefs. Nevertheless, Roman Catholicism remains the most common faith in the country. Without explicit confirmation from Borjas himself, his personal religious affiliation remains unknown.
