Where Is Josh Emmett From? Ethnicity, Religion, & More

4 min read

Being the fighter with the record for the most knockouts in his division certainly has the fighting community expecting a lot from Josh Emmett. With 7 out of 19 wins coming from KOs, the #8 featherweight contender greatly impressed the fighting realm with his victory over Bryce Mitchell in his last bout. A win that the MMA community celebrated once more when Mitchell threw himself into the fire with some pro-Hitler comments!

This begs the question – where does Emmett’s allegiances lie? Where exactly does Josh Emmett hail from? What is his ethnic background, and which flag does he carry on his shoulders? Today, let’s keep our focus on ‘CC0’s origin stories and learn everything there is to know about it.

What is Josh Emmett’s ethnicity and nationality?

‘CC0’ was born on 4 March 1985 in Phoenix, Arizona. According to reports, Josh Emmett belongs to the American-White ethnic background. And if we put the spotlight on the featherweight star’s last name, we can track the name to Middle England. Emmett does seem like a derivative of the Middle English female personal name ‘Emmot’, which is in turn, a derivative of ‘Emma’. On top of that, the name could also be locational like Emmott, a place near Colne in Lancashire. And that’s derived from ‘ēa-gemōt’, which in Old English meant the junction of streams. Hence, we can say that Emmett is predominantly an English last name. But Emmett is an American through and through and loves to carry the American flag on his shoulders.

The proud American previously had the intention to become a law enforcement officer. For that, he wrapped up his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Menlo College. But his 14 years of wrestling experience pushed him towards becoming a celebrated MMA fighter. His wrestling story began at El Camino Fundamental High School and even continued for 2 years into his college junior level. But soon, he moved to Menlo, and wrestling had to go on a break. But he couldn’t stay off the mats for long. Soon after clearing college, he entered Urijah Faber’s Ultimate Fitness gym and kickstarted his MMA career.

But his early days were filled with tragedy. He was raised in a dysfunctional household by a single mother and he lost his brother pretty early. Nevertheless, Emmett wasn’t one to quit. He strived hard and followed his mother’s advice to go for higher studies. But he couldn’t steer away from his calling in the world of mixed martial arts. Even though his mother was not a fan of fighting, she came forth as his greatest supporter.

But where do his religious beliefs lie? Is he a Christian like the majority of his American country folks? Let’s take a look at it, shall we?

Which religion does Josh Emmett follow?

As per multiple reports, Josh Emmett belongs to a Christian household. His wife, Vanessa Emmett, is a Roman Catholic. The #8 featherweight contender has never really said anything to confirm his religious status in any of his interviews or press conferences. But there was one time, when he revealed that he was indeed a follower of the Almighty with a 7-year-old social media post.

Back in 2018, prior to his battle against Jeremy Stephens at UFC on FOX 28, Emmett took to Facebook and shared a picture of himself along with his team. But it was the caption to the image that confirmed how deep his faith in God was. He wrote, “I shall not fear no man but God, though I walk threw the valley of death!” Unfortunately, ‘CC0’ failed to secure a win at the bout and lost it via a KO in the second round.

But now, Josh Emmett is on a 1-fight winning streak. On 5 April 2025, he’d get a chance to extend the streak by trying to win against Lerone Murphy at UFC Vegas 105. Of course, watching the featherweight with the most knockout victories in the division is something that the fighting community has been looking forward to. But will he actually win? We’ll find that out in a few short days.
