The much‑anticipated Speedway Classic kicked off with the kind of energy fans had been waiting for all year. Pregame festivities were nothing short of spectacular, with music, ceremonies, and a sea of fans packing the stands, buzzing with excitement. Everything seemed perfectly set for a thrilling night of action. But just as the main event was ready to unfold, the skies had other plans. Yes, the weather showed a great sign of disapproval.
Dark clouds loomed over Speedway Classic, and while the first drops of rain seemed harmless, they signaled what was to come. All we saw all this time is tarps going in and out, as crews battled the elements in a game of will we, won’t we. Eventually, the Reds finally stepped up to the plate, even scratching across the game’s first run. But Mother Nature, unrelenting, had the final say, transforming the iconic speedway into a glistening, watery mess before the action could truly take flight.
So, now the game is stopped. When will it resume?
“The Speedway Classic has been suspended and will resume tomorrow at 1 pm EST,” Talkin Baseball wrote on Instagram, sharing the latest update on the game.
So, the game is done for today, and despite such fanfare and grandeur, it is all over now for today. The rest of the action will be live again tomorrow.
For the unversed, the Speedway Classic had a rough night with the weather. It first went into a rain delay at 7:19 p.m. ET, just after Braves legend Chipper Jones and Reds icon Johnny Bench tossed out the ceremonial first pitches. Rain had been falling on and off all day, even during the Braves’ batting practice, and it picked up right before the scheduled start.
After about a 2-hour wait, play finally got underway, with Cincinnati pitcher Chase Burns throwing the first pitch. But it took just 16 minutes, at 9:57 p.m., for the rain to return, forcing a second delay. Hence, by 10:28 p.m., officials decided to suspend the game for the night.
The game will start from where the Reds left off their batting yesterday, and all the fans with tickets for today will be able to flock in tomorrow. However, a point to note here is that there is no more reserve day left after tomorrow. So, if the game gets battered by a downpour again tomorrow, it will end up in a tie!
Now, that’s surely not a result anyone would wish for, but it is what it is.
Stay tuned for more…
