When she moved to Alabama, she cited her family coming to her games as one of the dealbreakers. Nye’s decision was far from unprecedented; the Nyes have always put family first. While Aaliyah grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, her basketball career didn’t begin its ascent till her mother decided to move to Michigan. Aaliyah’s mother, LaQueena, believed a move would help her three daughters gain better educational and athletic opportunities. So she made the switch and would take care of them alone during their freshman season in Michigan. The move paid off when Aaliyah received her first college offer, leading her to believe she might actually be cut out for this. From getting over her fear of meeting new people to making it to the WNBA, Aaliyah’s family has been there for every challenge, whether big or small.
As the first member of the Gun Lake tribe to play in the WNBA, she now prepares to set the WNBA ablaze and pay homage to her ancestors.
What is Aaliyah Nye’s ethnicity? Where is she from?
Aaliyah Nye grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, and is a tribal citizen of the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians of Michigan, also known as the Gun Lake tribe. She has spent much of her life enjoying her family’s tribal community and has emphasized their Native American heritage. At a young age, she started learning about her culture and would attend camps that taught her the tribe’s history with demonstrations, such as building tents.
“We always participated in tribal activities growing up,” said Nye. “We would be in Indian Ed classes, and we went to our tribe’s reservation, our pow wow. And we would participate in the Michigan Indian Family Olympics. That’s when all tribes come together, and they bring their families and compete in track and field, basketball, archery, and all those types of events.”
Learning from the cohesive values that tribes prosper from, Aaliyah appropriately brought them to the hardwood as well. While she was certainly a great player, it was her ability to uplift and motivate those around her that filled her high school coach, Rob Smith, with appreciation. As an example, Smith pointed to Nye’s last game at East Lansing, in which she was held scoreless. “For her to come out and have that kind of game, when not a lot went right for her, and for the other kids to step up, it was really a culmination of all of her hard work and interaction with the girls,” Smith said. “To me, that’s great leadership.”
Understanding the value of the tribal wisdom that surrounds her, Aaliyah pays the tribe back through her gratitude and pro-activeness. “I’m so grateful to have the tribe in my life,” said Nye. “They’re just like a second family. I’m not afraid to say I’m Native American. We’re just like one big family, even if we aren’t related by bloodline, but it’s just like the connection.” Her move to the WNBA has certainly opened up doors that allow many like her to dream.
What is Aaliyah Nye’s religion?
While Aaliyah Nye’s religion has not been disclosed publicly, it can be speculated that they do not practice a religion. Indigenous tribes in Michigan, like those in many other parts of North America, have their own distinct spiritual traditions and beliefs, which may not be practices common to traditional religions.
Which high school did Aaliyah Nye attend?
Aaliyah Nye attended East Lansing High School in East Lansing, Michigan, along with her sisters Aashawnti and Aazhenii. Aaliyah made the move as a freshman in high school, but was hesitant to do it at first. Moving away from Meridianville, Alabama, was no joke to her. “I was afraid to move from family and friends,” Aaliyah said. “I’m just afraid to meet new people sometimes. I was scared.”
However, the Nye sisters gradually adapted to life in East Lansing, finishing with a 16-1 record and winning the Conference Championship. Aaliyah started to get noticed in the later stages of the season; her 20-point performance against Grand Ledge that season was essentially the game that broke her out.
During her sophomore year, Aaliyah helped lead the team to an outstanding 27-1 overall record. This included a game where she knocked down six three-pointers in the state championship game, setting a state record. Such performances made her a highly sought-after recruit, earning 16 scholarship offers and eventually committing to the University of Illinois.
Aaliyah then lived with her father for the following years, where he pushed her to be better every day. “The last two years that I have spent living with my dad has been good. He has taken good care of me and will do whatever it takes to make me a better basketball player,” she said.
During her junior year, she averaged 17.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.8 steals per game. This would earn her First Team All-State honors in Michigan, the first such accomplishment of her career. She would repeat the feat next year as a senior, averaging 16.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in a season that was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She finished her East Lansing High career with 1,370 points and received accolades such as runner-up for the 2020 Michigan Miss Basketball and the Associated Press Division 1 Player of the Year, after a short yet successful senior year.
