Weeks After Controversial UFC Retirement, Jose Aldo Gets a ‘Special Tribute’

5 min read

‘Jose Aldo, the Brazilian Soccer legend’, what if we told you this could’ve been a reality? In the colorful heart of Rio de Janeiro, where football runs through the veins of citizens, a young boy once dreamed of donning the iconic red and black jersey of Flamengo. That young boy went on to become one of the greatest ever in his sport, and recently even ended his journey with a retirement. However, it was not Soccer that he left. That young boy chose a different path, the one of MMA. And his legendary journey in MMA will be remembered forever, where through his warpath, Jose Aldo earned the nickname, ‘The King of Rio’.

Following a controversial unanimous decision loss to Aiemann Zahabi at UFC 315 in Montreal, despite a valiant effort, an emotional Aldo decided it was time to hang up his gloves, stating, “I can’t do this anymore.” This marked the end of a storied career that saw him become the inaugural UFC Featherweight Champion and a 2023 inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame. Aldo’s seven title defenses of the 145-pound belt made him one of the greatest featherweights to ever grace an Octagon.

Now, however, it seems all that is in the past. And after his retirement, it was just a matter of time before Aldo was to be honoured and respected for his accolades and iconic moments he has garnered throughout his stellar career. And would you know! That young boy, rooting to play for Flamengo one day, was given a special tribute today by the Flamengo Museum in Gavea. They unveiled a special exhibition dedicated to José Aldo’s illustrious MMA career. The display, featuring memorabilia from his time in the UFC, serves as a testament to his achievements and his unwavering passion for Flamengo.

As he shared this news with his fans on Instagram, Aldo wrote: “I had the honor of being invited by the Flamengo Museum team and receiving such a special tribute. The Museum now also houses part of my journey and achievements in the UFC, which will be on temporary display in Gávea. This space means a lot to me—not only because of my history in sports but also due to my lifelong passion: Flamengo!”

‘The King of Rio’ further added, “I sincerely thank the entire team for this recognition. Bringing my legacy to a place that holds so much passion and memory is a tremendous gift. The boy who once dreamed of playing football now has part of his story told there. Thank you, truly!”

And what a legacy to honor indeed. To be able to present your country at such a global stature and become one of the best that the sport has ever seen isn’t an easy feat for anyone.  ‘The King of Rio’s fighting style and his intensity brought a whole new aspect of fighting to the world of MMA. From powerful and precise striking to impeccable takedown defense, he had it all, and when he entered the Octagon, he never shied away from showing it all.

Yet, Aldo isn’t the only Soccer fan who fights in the Octagon. Many fighters find solace and inspiration in the beautiful game of football.

From Octagon to the Soccer pitch: UFC fighters who love Soccer

We start off our list with Conor McGregor, the Irish MMA superstar, who has deep roots in football. Before his rise in MMA, McGregor played for Lourdes Celtic’s youth team in Dublin. His admiration for Manchester United stems from their “success and winning mentality,” influenced by Irish legends like Denis Irwin and Roy Keane. McGregor’s passion isn’t just passive; he actively participates in football matches, recently playing for Black Forge Inn FC, where he humorously noted using the same shoulder that “broke noses and eye sockets” in the UFC.

Then comes another Brazilian MMA legend who loves Soccer; however, Aldo and Anderson Silva support rival clubs. The Brazilian legend’s allegiance lies with Corinthians, one of Brazil’s premier football clubs and rivals of Flamengo. And in 2011, the club recognized his dedication by signing a sponsorship deal with him. Silva’s friendship with football icon Ronaldo further solidifies his deep connection to the sport.

Even the Liverpool-born Darren Till‘s support for his hometown club is unwavering. Celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League triumph in 2020, Till shared, “I went down to the ground, but I couldn’t stay long because I had training the next day!” His dedication to both his sport and his club showcases the balance he maintains between his professional and personal passions.

These fighters exemplify how the worlds of MMA and football intertwine. Showcasing their multifaceted personalities and the universal appeal of football across cultures and professions. And perhaps after reading all this, it is easy to understand how high an honor has been bestowed upon Aldo. The question is, can anyone ever repeat this? What do you think?
