“We Had a Hiccup”: Jade Carey’s Oregon Beavers Coach Breaks Silence on Team’s Previous Performance Without Star Gymnast

2 min read

A sellout crowd at the Gill Coliseum watched the ‘Jade Carey show’ this Saturday. What else do we call it? Yes, it was the Oregon Beavers’ Senior Day. But Carey absolutely stole the thunder from the rest of the 7 seniors. She’s a 2x Olympic medalist, after all. No wonder, when she was absent from a crucial NCAA meet this season, the rest of the Beavers had to push harder than usual. What had happened?

The Oregon Beavers had assembled at the Fort Worth Convention Center on February 21 for the Metroplex Challenge. Facing No # 14 Arkansas, No # 19 Arizona, and Southeast Missouri State (SEMO), they’d finished third, which was way lower than what was expected of them. This was despite the fact that Jade Carey won the all-around title, while also bagging event titles on the bars (9.925), beam (9.950), and floor (9.925). This truly came down as a big blow for the side, as coach Tanya Chaplin confessed today after their Senior Day meet.

In the post-meet press conference on March 15, Tanya Chaplin confessed, “They did a great job of really staying strong you know. I think we had a hiccup at Metroplex um that was probably one of our where we saw like that wear and tear hit us the most.” However, when the Beaver gymnasts realised they’d be competing without Jade Carey next week, they truly pulled up their socks.

Chaplin also commended them saying, “But they came back the next week knowing that Jade was not going to be competing and they came back really strong and competed strong at Stanford and then brought that energy back to um San Jose before we came home so we were on the right trajectory.”

This story is developing…
