The most dejected person in the draft right now is Shedeur Sanders. “Tomorrow’s the day,” he said yesterday, on the second day of the draft. And in a way, he looked as if he had a better chance at Round 2 than Round 1. But missing out on Round 3 also? That’s a huge reason to worry for the Colorado QB. Shedeur Sanders might just be labeled as the biggest tragedy of the draft by now because not many experts placed him this low. In these testing times, Sanders will need all the support he can get, especially from the Colorado community.
The Colorado staff is a tightly knit unit. They operate like a family. That dynamic is rare in other college football programs. Staff stepping up for players in need is a rare thing to see. Deion Sanders works with people who have been close to him for years, like Warren Sapp. The man is the pass rush coordinator for the Buffaloes and has naturally been around Shedeur, too. Given the two coaches’ close bond, it’s natural for support to come for Sanders from the Sapp family.
Sapp’s daughter, Mercedes, shared a relatable story. To allude to how Sanders must feel, she shared a post on her Instagram story. It depicted a young Naruto standing in a wide arena, with hundreds of people looking at him, anticipating his next moves. Mercedes was likely alluding to the fact that everyone’s attention is currently focused on Sanders’s draft status. It looks like it’s him vs. the rest of the world. We were expecting bad news for Sanders right from the beginning. But this bad? It must be pinching hard at Shedeur Sanders, definitely, even if he’s not showing it.
Sapp himself couldn’t help but express his thoughts about how the Saints shocked the football community with their pick in the second round. The team was one of the last remaining hopes for Sanders, but the Saints chose Tyler Shough over him. He wrote on X, “It’s personal. Wow.” This is somebody Sapp has helped develop, so it’s natural for him to be disappointed. Given how close Sapp is to Deion Sanders, he must’ve been looking out for Shedeur like a father figure, too.
How is Shedeur Sanders feeling right now, you’d ask? Despite the massive downturn of events in the draft, Sanders is holding on to his faith for support. Despite being one of the most high-profile players in CFB, his tanking draft projections are also costing him big time in his pocket.
Shedeur Sanders leans on faith for support as money matters now come into play
Shedeur Sanders seems to have a close reliance on faith, as he has shown since he slipped out on Day 1. He said then, “We all didn’t expect this, of course. But I feel like with God, anything’s possible — everything’s possible. I don’t feel like this happened for no reason.” And today, while he was looking at the proceedings of Day 2, he said, “We’re here, we’re in good spirits, of course. God don’t make mistakes,” while appearing on brother Shilo Sanders’ livestream. With him being out of Days 1 and 2, our worst fears might be coming true. Is Day 3 also not set to be Sanders’ moment of glory?
NFL Rookie Watch wrote on Instagram that sources are already readying themselves to see the tag of UDFA against the QB’s name. And part of that is also because of his “[turning] off teams.” On the day before the draft, NFL analyst Tom Pelissero revealed that a particular staff from a team was in no way pleased with Sanders. “The worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life,” the anonymous coach told him. His attitude is… well, one you can’t ignore.
But if Sanders goes undrafted, he might have no other option but to come back to CFB. And it seems like that is where the grass is green for the QB, along with other things, too. In college football, Sanders is currently worth a whopping $6.5 million per season. Against that number stands his probable 4-year rookie deal at just $5.298 million. There’s still a sliver of hope for Sanders at Day 3 of the draft. But, should he get picked, then he’ll be missing out on what would seem like a more sensible course of action at the moment. And it pays well, too.
Meanwhile, with the way his draft is turning out, no one can clearly anticipate where the QB is going. He received a brutal prank call yesterday from someone pretending to be from an NFL team front office. All cameras panned towards him as he spoke with a smile, as the caller reportedly told him, “Have to wait a little longer.” Lo and behold, Tyler Shough ended up getting picked. What confused Sanders was that it was a number he’d only given out to NFL front offices.
No other player in the draft is having as rough a time as Shedeur Sanders. Sure, there are areas of his attitude that need some attention. His game needs some more fine-tuning. But there’s no chance a team has absolutely no use for a guy like him. One person commented under the post shared by Mercedes, “Greatest [QB] of all time was pick 199. Ain’t nun but a thang.” Sanders’ draft is already witnessing all it could possibly see. It wouldn’t be surprising if it begins to take the Tom Brady arc now.
