US Swimming Star Found “Puking Their Guts Out” As Problems Worsen At World Championships

The 2025 World Aquatics Championships are being held in Singapore from July 11 to August 3, 2025, at the World Aquatics Championships Arena in the Singapore Sports Hub, with swimming to begin on July 27, 2025. Day 1 in Singapore underlined how poorly the U.S. men are faring. In the men’s 400 m freestyle final, Germany’s Lukas Märtens claimed gold in 3:42.35, fending off Sam Short and Kim Woo‑min. No American made the podium or threatened the top, leaving the U.S. notably absent from the final medal picture. Didn’t stop there as well….

In prelims of the 4×100 m freestyle relay, the U.S. quartet (Casas, Kulow, Lasco, Sammon) posted the fastest time of 3:11.17, but in the final, Australia surged away in 3:08.97 (gold), Italy got silver in 3:09.58, and the U.S. settled for bronze in 3:09.64. in the finals. The World Championship has not been going great for the family, and neither for the USA. The sport had gone beyond the boundaries of a pool and rather taken the form of a respiratory disease.

Yamato Fukasawa shares that an American swimmer was ‘puking their guts out’ after their race, amidst reports of rampant illness among Team USA,” read a tweet by Swim Updates. As per the report, the United States swimming team arrived in Singapore still recovering from an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis, contracted during their pre‑meet training camp in Phuket, Thailand, which affected several athletes before competition even began. The tweet further read, “Fukasawa is the 2nd seed in the 200 Breast and will notably be competing with a bolt in his hand after breaking his thumb in May.

Yamato Fukasawa is Japanese, representing Japan in the men’s 200 m breaststroke at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, and he was the first to point out the problems.

He tweeted in Japanese, translated to, “After the race, there was an American athlete puking their guts out. Not sure if it’s food poisoning or just a lack of training. Everyone’s carrying their own burdens, huh. Gotta step up my game! Feeling inspired.” Fukasawa earned his seeding with a time of 2:07.47, securing gold at the 2025 Japanese National Championships, placing him behind only China’s Qin Haiyang (2:07.57). Meanwhile, for the USA, the event keeps getting worse.

The Swimming Championships get worse for the US team

The championships are not going very well for the USA team. Even Katie Ledecky’s World Cup chances are weak.  “World Championships Singapore 2025 #AQUASingapore2025 Two US athletes fail to qualify… This is the first time in history,” tweeted Fukasawa again in Japanese. Swimsan chimed in, saying that 2025 Worlds marked the first time since 1908 that the US did not make the semifinals of the men’s 100 back. Tommy Janton, the U.S. entry in the men’s 100 m backstroke, touched the wall in 53.87 seconds, finishing 18th overall, and missed the semifinal cut by 0.09 seconds.

Jack Aikins also failed to advance, placing 44th in 56.54s, placing both U.S. hopefuls well outside the top 16 and ensuring no American would race on into the semis. Aikins was one of the members suffering from gastroenteritis. Backstroke has been at the core of US men’s dominance in the 21st century, especially in the 200 backstroke. Last summer, the US men missed the Olympic podium in the 200 backstroke for the first time since 1992. Could this be a sign of a weakening within the team?
