“David vs. Goliath.” That’s how many are describing Gable Steveson‘s stunning defeat to Wyatt Hendrickson. ‘The Golden Gable’ didn’t get the storybook ending he hoped for in his final college wrestling appearance. Despite a season of sheer dominance, the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist faltered when it counted most. Hendrickson, representing Oklahoma State, delivered a crushing upset that left fans in disbelief. With his wrestling chapter ending in a stalemate, Stevenson’s next move might be closer to the UFC than ever. Why? Let’s find out.
After his Tokyo Olympics journey, the Golden Gophers wrestler tried to cement his status as a top entertainer in WWE. However, he failed in his attempt to become the top dog within the promotion. Soon after, he tested his mettle in the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, but that didn’t work out either. Finally, he returned to his roots for a final run at college wrestling, which ended in a bittersweet manner. So, what’s next for the Olympic Gold medalist? Well, it appears that his final destination will be UFC.
While having a conversation on ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ the host inquired whether or not Steveson had any conversation with the UFC CEO Dana White regarding his transition to the MMA, to which the former Olympic Gold Medalist emphasized that he has yet to have any former conversation with the UFC CEO but he is expecting to have it very soon, “I have not spoken to Dana personally. That’s one meeting I would love to have face-to-face. I’ve been waiting a long time to see him.”
The wrestler further mentioned that when he was at the peak of his career, the UFC CEO wanted to speak with him, but he couldn’t find the time in his schedule for the conversation, “I know after the 2021 Olympics, he reached out and wanted me to come see him in Vegas and everything else. That’s one meeting that I would love to have and love to see. If I can get in front of his face and really pitch who I am and pitch who he can see and who I will be, I think that would be the greatest thing.”
The meeting never materialized as Steveson accepted a lucrative offer to fight under a WWE manager. However, with his career nearing its end, the wrestler is now eyeing a move to the UFC, and fans have plenty to say about it.
MMa community gives a reality check to Gable Steveson on his UFC Move, “Too Old.”
A social media user called out Steveson for being too old for the UFC, “he’s to old should of had that meeting 4 years ago”. Well, he may appear older due to his massive stature; however, many might not be aware that he is only 24 years old.
It must be noted that Dana White is not merciful to individuals who reject his offer. Now that Gable Steveson doesn’t have any option left, the UFC might dictate the terms of the contract, and Steveson might have to agree to them. “He cashed himself out. If he is serious, he should take whatever offer they give him now,” wrote another fan.
Furthermore, another man stated that those criticizing Steveson for being old should understand that he is not just a common fighter; he has a deeper connection to the world of MMA. He trained alongside Jon Jones for his battle against Stipe Miocic, and he has good relations with other fighters as well, “He’s too old”’— LOL. What? Listen, he’s 24. An Olympic Champ. The learning curve for HW is minuscule compared to lighter weights and also, HWs peak later in life. These “too old” comments are just plain wild. Dude is friends with JBJ, too. I’m pretty sure Jon will get him right.”
Moreover, a netizen highlighted that the heavyweight division is facing a draught at this moment and that the inclusion of Gable Steveson might solve it: “The heavyweight division is so empty right now, bro.”Well, it is not as if the heavyweight division doesn’t pack any heat, but it is a fact that Jon Jones has been holding the division hostage for quite some time as he is hell bent on not fighting Tom Aspinall.
Last but not least, a social media user called out Steveson and, entire management team for that balloney they made out of his career. “horrible career management from his team. Should have went to the ufc back then before he lost his hype against hendricksson,” the fan wrote.
With high-hopes in his mind, Gable Steveson has expressed his willingness to compete under the UFC management. However, how will Dana White react to these statements? Only time will tell. Nonetheless, what are your thoughts on the hubbub? State your opinions in the comments below.
