Sean Brady just shook up the welterweight division with a career-defining performance against Leon Edwards at UFC London. The Philadelphia native didn’t just beat a former champ—he overwhelmed him. Submitting ‘Rocky’ for the first time in his career made the win even more historic. With that dominant showing, the 32-year-old has firmly planted himself in the conversation for the top spot in the rankings. But now comes the real intrigue—what’s next for Sean Brady? It seems he might be taking on Ian Garry next in the division. Well, this is what former UFC fighter Josh ‘The Punk‘ Thomson feels.
During the UFC 315 weigh-in show, Brady sent out a message to all the contenders in the division. However, the American wrestler made it clear that he was definitely up for a fight with Garry. Brady said, “Me and Ian. Me and Ian should fight. Whoever wins [should get the title shot]. Like, even if Belal wins and he isn’t able to fight for a while, like I wanna fight towards the end of the summer, like, August. Let me and Ian fight, and then whoever wins that is the true– even though I know I’m the true #1 contender– whoever wins [is the real #1 title contender].” Now the UFC might just be handing his wish as revealed by Thomson on his Weighing In podcast.
While speaking with Big John McCarthy, the former UFC fighter said, “Okay, so, I heard that Ian Garry and Sean Brady are already in talks. It sounds like that fights going to go through. They’re going to end up fighting each other. I don’t know if that will be for the number one contender spot based on if Shavkat is still promised that title shot. If he’s healthy, and when he gets healthy. I don’t know the details on any of that. I just know that apparently, it’s Ian Garry and Sean Brady supposed to be getting worked out. The contract’s getting worked out on that.” At the moment, there is no official announcement for the fight as of yet. But as fans, we would definitely like to see the fight happen.
Ireland’s rising star is back on track in a big way. Ian Machado Garry, often hailed as ‘The Future’ of the UFC, delivered a statement win over Carlos Prates, reigniting his momentum with style. Stepping in on short notice, Garry faced a daunting challenge in the form of the feared Brazilian Muay Thai specialist, whose knockout power had many doubting the Irishman’s chances. But under the bright lights in Kansas City, Garry silenced the skeptics, outclassing Prates and walking away with a well-earned unanimous decision victory. However, Brady wasn’t quite impressed with it.
Sean Brady shares his words of advice to Ian Garry after his latest victory
After a big victory, Garry’s dream for a title shot might just be around the corner. However, despite the momentum behind him, Garry’s path to a title shot remains uncertain. Responding to Garry’s lofty ambitions was none other than Sean Brady, the top-ranked welterweight sitting five spots above Garry at No. 1. And Brady didn’t mince words. He delivered a harsh dose of reality, making it clear that Garry still has a long way to go before entering the title conversation. While talking on the SteadyPicks podcast, Brady didn’t quite seem to be impressed with the way Garry performed.
He said, “Ian did what Ian does. He f*cking touches you and runs for three rounds, then he got beat up for two rounds, then said he’s getting a title shot. My man was on his hands and knees. I don’t know how Prates didn’t finish him in that last sequence on the ground. He had him, bro. He was done. To say after a performance like that, you deserve a title shot. He can go weigh in and be the backup fighter all he wants. That doesn’t mean f**king d*ck. You just beat No. 13. You don’t deserve anything.” As Brady pointed out, and many would likely agree, Garry’s latest win came against the No. 13-ranked welterweight. In a division as deep and dangerous as this one, where any ranked contender can shine on the right night, that victory only takes him so far.
‘The Future’ may have climbed to the No. 6 spot, but in a shark tank like the welterweight division, he still has a long and challenging road ahead. Will he fight Sean Brady next in the division? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
