A late bloomer, but constant maturation on the part of Tommy Paul has helped him achieve his goals The once-lost 21-year-old college student who wasn’t even fond of tennis until he realised he had a flair for it finally broke into the Top 10. For those unaware, the American star took over the No. 9 spot in ranking after registering an impressive quarterfinal outing at the Australian Open earlier this season. The occasion marks a turning point in his career and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by his influencer girlfriend, Lorenze Paige.
Before he is due for another showdown, his girlfriend Paige posted a wholesome update for fans. She took to her Instagram to upload a series of snaps summing her recent activities and among those snaps was her award to Paul for reaching the Top 10. She gifted the American sensation a classic watch piece but, that was hardly the highlight of it. Lorenze engraved a beautiful message for her boyfriend on the watch’s case back, which read – “Top Ten and Beyond With Love Paige.”
For those uninitiated, the pair started dating in 2022 and publicized their romance later that fall. The couple shares one of the cutest relationships on the pro circuit and their dynamic is shared by fellow tennis player Taylor Fritz, who also happens to be dating a social media influencer, Morgan Riddle. Adding to this, Paul has now joined Fritz(No. 4) as the second American man in the top 10.
Since his outing at the Rod Laver Arena, Paul hasn’t taken a step back and continued touring. His next stop was in Dallas, where he took things a step further to book a semifinal date against Denis Shapavalov. Despite maintaining course, Paul lost the contest in straight sets to the event’s eventual champion. Nearly two weeks later, the 27-year-old Connecticut local jetted for the Mexican Open and earned his spot in the second round after edging past Gabriel Diallo.
Tommy Paul’s longtime coach is Brad Stine, who has also coached Jim Courier and Kevin Anderson. This marks their sixth season together. “I think Tommy’s just become progressively more professional in his approach to things,” Stine said to ATP Tour. “I would say that once he cracked Top 100 and started to see the progress of moving up a little bit, it became a natural process for him to want to continue to improve, continue to climb the ladder, especially when there’s a lot of motivation there with the other American guys.”
As for Paul’s latest breakthrough in the Top 10, he remarked on the feat with a poignant statement before kicking off his campaign in Mexico.
Tommy Paul reveals motivation to reconcile with tennis
American star Tommy Paul came a long way. He entered the circuit ranked 1508 in December 2014 and ten years later, he has achieved what many can only dream of. Naturally, his journey is filled with struggles, mixed with motivation to do better and outshine formidable talents on the tour.
Before commencing his Mexican Open run, Paul revealed what it took to break into the Top 10. “When I was young, I had very difficult moments in my relationship with tennis. I saw myself making many sacrifices without achieving the expected results. All my college friends were enjoying life, but when I turned 21 and saw them starting to settle into office jobs, I truly became aware of how privileged I was to dedicate myself to tennis.”
He continued, “I began to enjoy training, improve, and surround myself with the right people. I realized that tennis was a job, but also something that made me have fun.” Moreover, Paul also shared his ambitions to further climb the ladder. “I believe I have a lot more to do. My main goal is to reach the top 5 and win more important tournaments than those I already have in my record.”
But first, the American sensation needs to earn more credits. To follow up, Paul has his sights set on the Mexican Open and will lock horns with countryman Marcos Giron on Thursday, February 27, to further his agenda.
