Michelle Wie West welcomed her first child, Makenna Kamalei Yoona West, in 2020. However, her second pregnancy was not as smooth as the first. The 36-year-old former golfer underwent IVF to conceive her second child, Jagger Jerry YooJun West. After a year of uncertainties and challenges, she finally welcomed her baby boy in 2024. Despite the struggles she faced during her second pregnancy, if you ask Wie West, she will point at her baby girl for making her “dumb.”
The retired golfer recently sat down for a walk-and-talk interview with Andrew Santino. The Stanford alumni first began with the conversation by discussing how she feels “like it was the people that were out of the library that those people became something,” before adding how her pregnancy made her “dumb.” “I feel I’m pretty dumb after being pregnant twice now though,” Wie West chimed in and a surprised Santino replied, “You think the pregnancy made you dumber?”
A confident Wie West replied, “One hundred percent. I-my brain don’t work.” Santino pointed out the grammatical error in her reply “my brain don’t work,” and Wie West then humorously shared the incident that made her feel so.“The first one destroyed me. Really, I can’t do simple math anymore. So, you know, like on your children’s iPad, to give some parental controls, they give you a math problem.” She shared an anecdote about struggling to solve a basic multiplication problem (9 * 7) that her child’s iPad presented as part of parental controls. In that moment, she felt embarrassed when Yoona West quickly solved the problem.
However, just because Michelle Wie West makes fun of herself doesn’t mean she is actually dumb. The star, who first burst onto the course at the innocent age of 10, has always been an all-rounder. For instance, she was so studious that she journeyed across the country to compete in elite golf tournaments while completing her homework during long car rides. Not only that, but Wie West also graduated with a communications degree from Stanford University in 2012! However, despite this “struggle,” Michelle Wie West is busy securing future for her first child.

Talking about what changed in her life since she became a mother, Michelle Wie West said, “I mean, just your life in general. Like, I can’t imagine—I don’t remember my life without them now. I mean, it’s weird now having two, like, I don’t remember just having one, almost, you know? It’s like there’s—it’s—you can’t explain it. It’s so hard. It’s the hardest thing you’ll ever do, but at the same time, like, I don’t know. It’s just there’s something so amazing about it.” But with love comes the responsibility of securing your children’s future, and Wie West is doing everything in her power to make it as bright as possible.
Michelle Wie West recently sat down for an exclusive interview at Liberty National Golf Club, where the former golfer discussed how she is preparing her kids, especially her older child, for the future. Talking about Yoona West, Wie West shared that her child loves golf and tennis and is currently on a T-ball team. She is also starting to learn basketball in school. However, Wie West and her husband plan to wait until Yoona turns about six to really get into basketball.
Despite her young age, Yoona West has already learned valuable lessons about teamwork and work ethic, according to Wie West. “I love being outside with her.” What excites her even more is that Yoona’s golf swings are “getting pretty good.” Wie West and her husband, Jonnie West, often lie down at night to analyze her swing, noting her impact position and lag. They frequently exchange text messages with David Leadbetter about her swing. “I’m like, oh, my god, I can’t help myself,” an excited Wie West exclaimed.
