Terence Crawford Faces the Heat as Blocking Errol Spence Jr. From Boxing Hall of Fame Backfires

4 min read

Life comes at you fast. Just a few hours ago, Terence Crawford threw a wrench in Errol Spence Jr.‘s career, declaring it unworthy of Hall Of Fame shouts. just yet. As expected, the jab didn’t sit right with the boxing community, as The Truth might just be the best welterweight champion of modern times. Not only that. The 2023 Spence win stands as the crown jewel of Crawford’s own resume, making the statement even more bizarre.

As Terence Crawford’s words lit up the internet, former WBC interim super welterweight champion Erickson Lubin didn’t hold back. He jumped in, turning the tables on the Nebraskan with a sharp critique that hit like a reality check.

Terence Crawford’s resume in question after Spence jab

On Friday, the prominent boxing page Pro Boxing Fans posted the clip from the Pound 4 Pound podcast and it immediately went viral. As the clip reached Lubin, he quoted the post and wrote, “No disrespect but I don’t think Crawford really fought anyone either,” suggesting that even Terence Crawford’s resume might not stack up for a Hall of Fame nod.

No disrespect but I don’t think Crawford really fought anyone either. Moving up weight classes and stopping 11/12 is what we should credit him for tho https://t.co/uXfazjFHi5

While the statement by “Hammer” is debatable, it isn’t without its merits. To many, Bud has only defeated a few elite fighters, which include the likes of Kell Brook, Israil Madrimov, Amir Khan, and Spence himself. However, with Crawford himself downplaying Spence’s win over Kell Brook, his resume feels even slimmer now.

However, Lubin didn’t ignore Crawford’s legacy. He tipped his hat towards the consistency the Nebraskan has carried across the weight division. Lubin wrote, “Moving up weight classes and stopping 11/12 is what we should credit him for tho,” claiming how Crawford has knocked out every opponent other than Viktor Postol since moving up the weights.

Though Terence Crawford’s take might sting, there’s some truth to it. Errol Spence Jr.’s career is at a standstill at the moment. Nearly two years have passed since the Texan last stepped into the ring, with no comeback in sight. That said, if Spence chooses to lace up now, the timing couldn’t be better; a ready-made stage awaits him.

Errol Spence Jr.’s return hopefully awaited by Oscar De La Hoya

In a recent conversation with FightHype TV, Oscar De La Hoya revealed that he’s eyeing a lighter matchup for Vergil Ortiz Jr. before thrusting him into the championship spotlight. Fresh off a blazing four-month run with wins over Serhii Bohachuk and Israil Madrimov, Ortiz has been on fire. However, De La Hoya knows those battles can take a toll physically.

The Golden Boy promoter has his sights set on a Dallas homecoming for the undefeated 23-0 star, right in the heart of Cowboys Stadium. While he insists on having lots of options available, he is leaning towards Errol Spence Jr. “There’s a lot of options out there for Vergil. I’m excited. Imagine if we can put together a Vergil-Spence fight at Dallas Stadium at the Cowboys Stadium. That would sell out the place. I think that’s something to consider as well,” he stated.

Only Spence knows whether his body has recovered enough or not to consider this fight. However, a win against Vergil Ortiz can truly revive his career and might even shut down Terence Crawford’s jabs about his legacy in the process.
