Tennis World Unites to Celebrate Comeback Queen Belinda Bencic’s Triumphant Abu Dhabi Return from Maternity

What a story Belinda Bencic is writing! After a rollercoaster start to the season, the Swiss star has finally struck gold, adding a shiny new title to her collection. But this isn’t just another trophy for the cabinet—it’s her first win since embracing motherhood, making it all the more special. And let’s just say, the tennis community isn’t holding back their love and appreciation. From heartfelt tweets to touching posts, everyone’s raising a toast to Bencic’s grit and grace, and leading the fray are the likes of Boris Becker, Shelby Rogers, and Katie Boulter.

The Swiss tennis sensation took on Ashlyn Krueger in the finals of the Abu Dhabi Open and put on a spectacular performance. Despite losing the first set, she managed to dominate the remainder of the match and eventually clinched it 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Interestingly, this was just her fourth tour-level event since she returned to the courts after giving birth to her daughter Bella in April 2024. After her triumph, tributes started to pour in large numbers.

Lauding the star player, former pro Boris Becker wrote on X. “That’s what you call a comeback…. Well done Belinda B,” he wrote. Remember, Bencic made a comeback only in October and mostly focused on Challenger events. This year, she played two tournaments in Adelaide and the Australian Open and managed to reach only the fourth round. However, her persistent efforts finally paid off and the results were evident. More reactions continued to follow.

Becic’s British counterpart, Katie Boulter took to her X account and wrote, “What a woman .” A similar reaction came from former American pro-Shelby Rogers, who commented on a picture of Bencic holding her daughter, and wrote, “What a moment! Incredible! Congratulations!” Notably, the Swiss star has become the first mother to claim a WTA singles title since Elina Svitolina did so at Strasbourg in May 2023, and hence, the celebrations are quite understandable.

Caroline Wozniacki did not shy away from hailing the WTA star either and commented, “Congrats mama!! ,” on Instagram. Bencic herself is on cloud nine. One of the key factors that elevate her joy is the presence of her daughter in the stands. Bella watched her mother lift the trophy in Abu Dhabi.

Belinda Bencic exudes immense joy after winning the title in Abu Dhabi

Belinda Bencic and her boyfriend Martin Hromkovic took their relationship to the next level when the tennis star took to her Instagram account to announce her pregnancy in November 2023. While many questioned whether Bencic would be able to return to the courts and play sensationally as she did at the Tokyo Olympics, the Swiss star has finally delivered a strong statement with her win in Abu Dhabi. And for her, it’s a highly emotional moment. Speaking after the match, Bencic said that winning the title in front of Bella was like a “mini dream come true.”

I think only we know what we went through as a family,” she remarked. Continuing further, she expressed her gratefulness for Bella’s presence in her life and highlighted that the journey had not been an easy one.

“It’s tough to describe into words. We are so appreciative and blessed to have Bella in our lives, and then also to be able to still do what I want to do, and then also having the good results on top of that – the emotions were just that I’m incredibly grateful, blessed and just a mini dream come true,” Bencic added.

Now, as the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see if the Swiss star will be able to continue her momentum and bag more accolades going forward.
