“Just thinking about him at that moment made me settle down,” said Taylor Townsend after beating compatriot Jessica Pegula in the second round of the Italian Open 2023. It was her biggest singles victory after her comeback from maternity leave. Ever since, she has gone from strength to strength, winning two Grand Slam doubles titles including this year’s Australian Open. But it hasn’t been easy for the 28-year-old American to stay away from her son Adyn Aubrey. She channels positive thoughts thinking about him but being a full-time touring mother has its downsides. However, the American superstar was all smiles as she reunited with her baby boy after a hectic Middle East camp.
Townsend announced her pregnancy after performing in the 2020 US Open. The good news aired six years after she struggled with fertility issues. More tests revealed thyroid problems, weight concerns, and PCOS. When she was due, Townsend went through a C-section to give birth to Adyn. She was sidelined from competition for 18 months. Upon recovering, she even reflected on the traumatic experience she faced during pregnancy.
“Every single time I needed to get up to go to the bathroom, I needed help. Every time I got on and off the toilet, I needed help. That was hard for me. I couldn’t even bathe myself,” she told Essence. Despite bearing the rollercoaster journey, the American sensation came atop those situations and breathed in a newfound form.
The seasoned doubles player, now with a career-high ranking of No. 2, finally came back home to her son. She won the doubles crown in Dubai alongside No. 1 Katerina Siniakova. Following a successful outing in the Middle East, Townsend took to Instagram to share a heartwarming moment with Adyn. The chucklesome video recorded the 28-year-old relaxing with her family, with her son playing in her lap. “Reunited with all my favs,” read her social media story’s caption.
For those unaware, the American player never cracked the top 60 in the doubles rankings before becoming a mom. But, since her comeback in 2022, she has been on a continuous upward curve, achieving a credible status as a doubles player. Not only that, Townsend herself admitted to experiencing a resurgence after welcoming her 3-year-old son.
Taylor Townsend opens up about having a life outside the sport
Taylor Townsend’s postpartum tennis journey has brought her several moments of feats. She finished doubles semifinalist with countrywoman Madison Keys at the French Open in 2022, the same year she lifted the runner-up plate at the 2022 US Open alongside Caty McNally. With triumphant results coming her way more often than earlier, Townsend highlighted that her resurgent form only came to force after she gave birth to her son.
During the same interview with Essence, the American player said: “I feel like it’s been super fun for me because I’ve had a resurgence and have accomplished so many firsts that I never had in 11 years of being on tour.” She also talked about the positive prospects of having a family, outlining the ‘fulfillment’ and the sense of belongingness it brings with it.
Continuing further, she added, “So I would just say, don’t care about that. If you want to have a family, if that’s something that you want, it is so fulfilling because there is life outside of sport.”
Townsend lifted her second Slam title in the doubles column with Siniakova at the recently concluded Australian Open. And after another triumph in Dubai, she will now likely relax with her family for some time before she gets called for another tour-level adventure.
