“When I was young, I committed myself to showcasing Black hairstyles when I play, and that’s something that I take pride in,” Coco Gauff said in April last year after signing a deal with the pioneering natural hair care brand, Carol’s Daughter. Be it box braids, twists, or her natural hair, Gauff feels her hairstyle is a form of self-expression. Ever since she signed for Carol’s Daughter, Gauff has been engaging in multiple activities to redefine the brand’s move to “uplift Black beauty for a powerful new generation.” Recently, she was spotted in one of their ads again, revealing her favorite thing about her hair.
After signing the multi-year deal with Carol’s Daughter, Gauff further added, “I’m excited to help continue their mission of empowering millions of women and little girls to embrace their curls and coils with pride and authenticity.” Since its founding in 1993, Carol’s Daughter has seen investment and support from moguls like Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Jada Pinkett Smith, and even Jay-Z. Over the years, the support of these renowned personalities has helped them evolve into a leader in natural hair and skincare. Gauff emphasized that she couldn’t be prouder to align with a brand that shares her values.
The company’s founder, Lisa Price, was ecstatic to have Coco on board as well. “The power of seeing someone like Coco in the world of tennis, for me, is a testament to the work that has been done before her. While the representation of individuals who resemble us in this sport may be limited, their impact remains pivotal. It breathes life into the timeless adage: ‘If you can see it, you can be it.’ This is what makes this collaboration so special to me…In Coco, we celebrate the strength, beauty, and authenticity of all the generations to come,” Price said.
Just a few hours ago, Carol’s Daughter posted a video clip on their IG handle, captioned, “You want hair like @cocogauff? Let your curls spring back stronger after every wash with our NEW Goddess Strength Curl Restoration Bonding Treatment.”
Coco can be seen flaunting different hairstyles in that video clip. She can also be heard saying, “What’s my favorite thing about my hair? The versatility. I can beat it, twist it, straighten it, I can serve any look.” Gauff further revealed that to keep her hair strong, she always trusts Carol’s Daughter’s new curl restoration concentrate. “Every time, after every style. The only way to make my hair spring back stronger. Not just strong, strong like me. Goddess Strong,” she added.
Talking about her hairstyles previously, Coco Gauff once said, “I’ve been open to trying new styles to play with. I want to be that representation, especially in my sport of tennis, where there are not a lot of Black girls playing.” What is her favorite hairstyle, though?
“I love to show braids, I love to wear my curls…[when] you look good and you feel good, and you feel good about yourself, it almost makes you perform better,” Gauff remarked. However, we mostly see her in a braided look. Is there any specific reason behind this? “I like my hair, but braids are just easier. Especially when I sweat—when my hair isn’t in braids, the salt from my sweat dries out.”
Over the years, Coco Gauff has not only taken her game to another level, but she has also become a fashion icon.
Coco Gauff’s honest take on being labeled as a fashion icon
Apart from dazzling on the courts, Coco Gauff is now also making waves in the fashion world with her stunning looks. Talking about her love for fashion, she once said, “I really do love fashion. I love makeup. I love that type of thing. I just haven’t really thought about how I would build that into a brand, per se.”
Talking about her favorite brands, Coco revealed she loves Miu Miu, Ganni, and the high-end designer Fendi. Fashion and beauty are two things that, according to Coco, enhance her performances further.
In 2023, during an interview with Tennis Channel, when Coco was told that she was now being considered a fashion icon on social media, she looked a bit amused and smiled, saying, “I am glad that people kinda take notice of it. So, I guess I am on tennis fashion Twitter. I don’t know.” Later, she even reshared that video clip on her IG handle with the caption, “LOL“.
Gauff’s passion for beauty and fashion grew from a very early age. “I’ve been watching makeup tutorials for as long as I can remember. When I was 12, my mom let me go to the store to buy my first mascara. And then I just kept begging her for more and more makeup. Eventually, she let me get more, but her thing was just making sure I knew how to do it right so I wouldn’t go out looking crazy. The makeup tutorials on YouTube definitely helped a lot. I like Jackie Aina, Alissa Ashley, and Patrick Starrr—those are the main three I watch every day,” she said in an interview with Into The Gloss in 2019.
These off-court things aside, though, there is some bad news for Gauff! With Jessica Pegula’s recent triumph in Charleston, she has now overtaken Gauff as the new world number 3 and the new American number 1. Coco has now slid down to the number 4 in the world rankings for the first time since October 2024. Do you think she can bounce back quickly and make an entry into the Top 3 soon?
