Some legacies defy measurement because they are too vast to fathom. Over the three decades that Steve Kerr spent in the NBA, glory came his way. Five rings as a hooper, and four more as the coach of the Golden State Warriors, the 59-year-old’s tale is one for the history books. However, with time and age comes a moment when the next dance seems like the last one. And after a sad end to the 2024-25 season, suddenly, uncertainty lies ahead of Coach Kerr.
Indeed, it was Don Nelson and Mark Jones who placed the cornerstones for the rise of the dynasty. For example, Stephen Curry’s draft pick in 2009, signing Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson eventually. However, the major brain and brawn behind the true dynasty was Steve Kerr’s. Of course, he had the power of Curry and the others to do so. Now, speaking about the future on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami, Coach Kerr throws light on what lies ahead.
What does the future at the Warriors hold for Steve Kerr?
It’s a two-year window. Steph, Jimmy, Draymond, and even Steve have signed their deals. But when the question shifts to walking away, it hits differently. Steph cannot imagine another coach. Neither can we. Steve says he is fine going year to year, but let’s be real. This bond feels stronger. Feels like something that runs until the final buzzer. Some duos are simply destined to finish their story together, right?
“I mean, I love my job. I love working with these guys, and I just know the NBA; I know how fragile everything is, and I know where our organization is,” Steve Kerr told Tim Kawakami. “We’re at a really interesting spot. I just don’t think it’s even worth speculating. I have no problem just coaching this year and then addressing it next summer.” Speaking of his contract, the Warriors’ head coach is signed for a 2-year, $35 million deal, making him the highest-paid coach in the league’s history.
However, when a franchise decides it wants to make bold moves, then contracts barely matter. We’ve seen such things happen in the NBA before. “I think that’s fair to management. It’s fair to everybody involved. And if they want me back, I’d probably say yes,” Steve Kerr poured his heart out. “I mean, how could I say no to the Warriors and Steph and Andre? But I’ve also learned that there’s no reason to even consider what’s gonna happen in the next year, because none of us has any idea.”
As unpredictable as the future looks now, one thing is clear: Steve Kerr’s heart and soul reside with the Golden State Warriors. Therefore, it’s going to be a no-brainer if the front office asks him to continue as the head coach. Meanwhile, Kerr made some emotional confessions about his relationship with his ultimate Golden Boy, Stephen Curry. Honestly, this duo feels like something straight out of folklore and fairytales.
Coach Kerr’s 11 years with Stephen Curry
Steve Kerr broke the Warriors’ 40-year drought, bringing the Larry O’Brien trophy to the Bay. Stephen Curry became the MVP for the first inn 2015, and after that it was an uphill trip for the duo. Weren’t there any setbacks? Of course! However, they always knew how to back. Eight years and four rings later, it’s an unsaid rule that their relationship is deep and meaningful.
“I just think 11 years together, you get to know each other better and better every year. You go through stuff. There’s probably no better connector than running the gamut of winning championships to missing the playoffs altogether, and then everything in between,” Steve Kerr confessed. “That’s what we’ve shared. We’ve been through it all, and there’s always a level of respect and comfort in knowing that each of us has the other’s best interest at heart. All we care about is winning, and that’s all we’re trying to do.”

Some bonds are built for banners and beyond. Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry have seen it all, from heartbreak to glory. The future may be a mystery, but this duo still writes their story with heart and hustle. If the Warriors call, Kerr will answer. After all, legends do not walk away. They finish the dance.
