A mother’s love is unconditional. Whether it’s an A-list celebrity or a world-renowned athlete, their mom always has their back. That’s exactly the case in the Curry household. Sonya doesn’t mind taking matters into her own hands when people go at her family. Turns out, there was an instance when she almost went viral for getting into an ugly altercation with fans during a Stephen Curry game. Fortunately, Sydel was there to save the day!
In the latest episode of Straight to Cam, Sydel Curry and Cameron Brink had a candid conversation with their mothers, Sonya and Michelle Bain-Brink. During one of the segments, Sydel revealed her mom’s heated confrontation with Thunder fans during the 2016 West Finals.
“We were in OKC for one of the finals games 2015-16, it was before KD came to the Warriors. And there were some fans going at her… and she’s like going back at them and then I started seeing phones going up and people started recording,” she said on the pod.
Understanding how quickly clips go viral these days and can be misconstrued, Sydel got worried for Sonya and warned her, “I’m like, ‘Mom, you gotta stop talking. Like people’s phones are going up, people’s phones are going up.’”
However, her mom continued chirping at the fans, “She’s going at them again cause they’re saying crazy stuff. Like, it’s naturally your instinct to be like, go back at them if someone’s saying something crazy about you. But then I see the phones and I’m in the age of social media like that stuff travels fast and you could say one thing and not even be what you meant.”
Fortunately, the situation did not escalate too far and did not lead to major consequences. But it did give Sonya one realization: “It’s funny because now the role’s reversed. She is the voice of reason. ‘Mom, calm down.’… That’s Sydel with me now. It’s like ‘Mom don’t do this. Mom, do that.’ And I just laugh. A lot of the times I laugh cause I’m like ‘Oh, how the tables have turned.’” While this was a one-off incident, Sonya usually tries to stay away from confronting hateful fans, especially on social media.
Sonya Curry reveals emotional reason behind staying away from confrontation with online trolls
Well, Sonya has been part of the NBA world for a very long time. Long before Steph, Seth, and Sydel were even born. Obviously, because their father, Dell Curry, was an NBA player and Sonya was used to the NBA life. Although there was criticism during that era as well, social media has amplified it to a whole new level in today’s day and age. So, Sonya finds it better to stay away from indulging with any online trolls—because she is worried about how it would affect her children.

“If I start doing that, I can’t control myself. So, I take to heart a lot of what people say about y’all because I have three kids out there. So, to hear the stuff that people are saying that makes no sense and they don’t know you all. Like again, that old school your grandmother comes out in me and it’s like okay, they don’t need the extra stuff. You know the extra attention coming back at them. So, I don’t really do it,” she confessed on the podcast.
Yes, Steph, Seth, and Sydel are already under the public spotlight and constantly get judged for every move they make. Their mother doesn’t want to add to their troubles by bringing unnecessary attention their way. But don’t think that she will not defend her family when needed, just like she did in OKC.
