Anthony Edwards was too busy torching the Oklahoma City Thunder to even glance at his phone, but that didn’t stop Stephen A. Smith from firing off some encouragement. With Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals heating up, Smith tweeted, “Handle your business @theantedwards_” — complete with a picture of him and Edwards in a serious-looking pregame exchange.
Only problem? Edwards was mid-cook.
By the end of the first quarter, Minnesota led 34-14, and Ant-Man had already poured in 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, meanwhile, was frozen by Minnesota’s reworked defense, held to just two points. It was a different Timberwolves team from Games 1 and 2 — more aggressive, more locked in, and clearly feeding off Edwards’ early fire.
Stephen A. Smith has long been a fan of Ant-Man. He’s called him “box office,” compared him to Jordan, and even claimed he’d brave Minnesota winters just to watch the kid play. This tweet was just the latest in a string of loud, proud endorsements, though Edwards probably won’t read it until the final buzzer sounds.
The Timberwolves needed a jolt down 2-0, and Edwards gave it to them. Smith’s message, mid-game as it was, just confirmed what everyone watching already knew: this moment belongs to Ant.
Even if he hasn’t read the tweet yet.
(This is a building story…)
