Greatness isn’t just a definition, and it comes from the strongest of characters who brave challenges, stigma, and anything that comes their way. Magic Johnson’s legacy stretches way past the basketball court. In 1991, the sports legend shocked everyone when he revealed he was HIV positive. It was back when the disease was surrounded by fear, shame, and so much misunderstanding. But instead of stepping away from the spotlight, Magic stepped up. He became one of the most visible advocates for HIV/AIDS education and empowerment. But Magic hasn’t walked this path alone—his journey has been powerfully shaped by the unwavering support and activism of his wife, Cookie Johnson.
And through it all, his wife, Cookie Johnson, has always supported him. But Cookie’s support didn’t end with standing by Magic Johnson. She rolled up her sleeves and made the cause her own. In 2006, she brought her passion to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF) as a board member. She fought the stigma through both neighborhood initiatives and big-name collaborations. She has taken her message everywhere. From international health summits to policy roundtables to intimate conversations with women and families living with HIV. That same spirit of connection and shared purpose has also led her to powerful partnerships with other advocates.
And she recently reunited with another vocal spirit to combat the taboo against AIDS, Tina Knowles. The two were just together recently at Tina Knowles’ book tour. Cookie Johnson even posted dedicatedly on Instagram. Her caption said, “Last night [3weeks ago] I attended Tina Knowles book tour for her new book, “Matriarch” in Los Angeles! It was a wonderful fireside chat moderated by Keke Palmer.” This shows that their relationship has grown deeper than just two individuals championing a cause.
And now, they have received honors for their efforts with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF). Tina Knowles was awarded with “The Elizabeth Taylor Commitment to End AIDS Award.” Whereas Cookie Johnson stepped into her role as “The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF) Champion for 2025.” Cookie Johnson made another dedicated post for this. She captioned it as “After many years working to advocate for and ensure treatment and support for people affected by HIV/AIDS, I’m happy to continue this fight alongside this organization founded by Elizabeth Taylor, a woman I adored.”
Her dedication and deep resonance with this issue were visible through her words. She continued, “In these difficult and uncertain times, ETAF continues its work in HIV prevention and education, along with its historically ongoing support for the care and treatment of those living with HIV.” Those are the words of a woman who knows the value of empathy. Because she has experienced it first-hand with Magic Johnson.
The Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion and Cookie Johnson’s Instagram post should serve as a wake-up call for each one of us. As society’s active members, let’s come forward to end this taboo. But let’s not forget the survivor himself. Magic has fought to break down stigma, make testing more available, and uplift marginalized communities through his Magic Johnson Foundation and years of public health work.
Beyond Magic, Cookie Johnson has her own way of serving
Magic Johnson’s legendary status often commands the spotlight. However, Cookie has quietly built what may be the family’s most enduring legacy. Through her social impact work. “Afternoon’s intimate gathering hosted by Cookie Johnson and Lizzy Mathis was so lovely!” read a heartfelt post from Private School Village. The Village Scholarship’s second year now supports 14 students across 9 private schools with a $340,000 investment.
Private School Village launched the initiative last year, with 12 first-graders receiving up to $25,000 each. It exemplifies Cookie Johnson’s dedication to creating educational opportunities for students of color from low-income households. Her leadership was equally evident at PSV’s fifth anniversary Sneaker Soiree, where she helped raise over $350,000 from 500+ attendees for the scholarship fund. Magic Johnson’s absence at recent TVS events doesn’t reflect disengagement, but rather Cookie’s ability to champion causes independently.
As the couple stated, “We are happy to support Private School Village and this new important scholarship program…It helps pave a brighter future for Black and brown elementary school students.” While Magic Johnson focuses on HBCU initiatives, Cookie has made TVS her mission. It just proves that she doesn’t need her husband’s star power to drive meaningful change. From intimate gatherings to high-profile fundraisers, she’s ensuring that her welfare initiatives continue thriving. Be it about healthcare or education, she’s working for all.
