Sherrone Moore Sees the Next Will Johnson in 185lb Prospect as Big Intel Emerges From Michigan Camp

5 min read

After the 2023 national title, Sherrone Moore stepped up to coach a Michigan team that had lost many of its championship stars. Despite that, they won eight games, including two signature upsets: beating rival Ohio State and then Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Yet, not everyone is sold on Moore. CBS Sports ranked him No. 58 among college football coaches for 2025, a drop from No. 52 last season. Add in a self-imposed two-game suspension from Michigan, and Moore is in a tight spot. He desperately needs to make big recruiting moves in the coming months to build positive momentum for 2025. And they’re clearly eyeing the right talent.

Defense is where Moore and Co. are setting their sights. Will Johnson’s exit from Michigan left many fans frustrated. Injuries piled up, games were missed, and he wasn’t on the field when the Wolverines needed him most. Some even thought he had “checked out” once Michigan’s playoff hopes faded. However, the NFL Draft revealed the truth—lingering injuries kept him from pre-draft workouts, causing his stock to plummet from a projected top-10 pick to No. 47 with the Arizona Cardinals. With Johnson heading to the NFL, Michigan now shifts its focus to finding the next lockdown corner in Ann Arbor.

On May 25, Michigan insider EJ Holland broke the news that the Wolverines have officially entered the race for Virginia CB 185lb prospect Chase Geter. The 2026 3-star cornerback from Ashburn, Va., announced his Michigan offer with excitement, saying, “Blessed to receive an offer from Michigan! @Coach_SMoore.” Ranked as the No. 40 CB and the No. 13 overall player in Virginia by 247Sports, Geter is starting to heat up on the national radar.

Former NFL CB Roc Carmichael has also backed the young prospect, calling him “nothing short of a professional.” On social media, Carmichael praised Geter’s maturity and work ethic, stating, “If you’re late on this kid you must be sleep! He is nothing short of a professional … yes sir no sir type of kid.. you want him in that foxhole with you!!!” In a separate post, he doubled down on his admiration, writing, “Keep grinding!! Chase is the truth!” So, with Michigan in pursuit and elite voices backing him, Geter’s stock is clearly on the rise.

“I think his style is a lot like Will Johnson, meaning he’s long and is a high football IQ player”

Chase Geter might be Michigan’s lowest-rated offer this week, but don’t let the stars fool you—his offer list tells a different story. With 27 schools chasing him, it’s clear Geter is one of the most underrated corners in the 2026 class. Michigan has had eyes on him for a while, with safeties coach LaMar Morgan keeping in contact since March. And why not? “I think his style is a lot like Will Johnson—he’s long and has a high football IQ,” Carmichael told EJ Holland. Now, Geter has already made a spring stop in Ann Arbor and left impressed with Sherrone Moore’s vision. Given that an official visit is set for next month.

Now it’s up to Michigan to make a lasting impression on Geter during his official visit. But they better not sleep—27 other programs are in the hunt, including in-state rival Michigan State.

It’s not just Michigan keeping tabs

Michigan State has jumped into the chase, offering a scholarship to Chase Geter. He’s now got nearly 28 offers, making him one of the hottest prospects on the board. Schools like Wake Forest, NC State, Penn State, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Syracuse, West Virginia, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, and more are all in the mix. With so many top programs vying for his talent, Geter’s recruitment battle is heating up fast.

And why not? Chase Geter’s junior season was nothing short of spectacular. He racked up 60 tackles, snagged 2 interceptions, and broke up 10 passes. His impact didn’t stop there—he recorded 2 tackles for loss while allowing just 4 passes, with zero first downs or touchdowns given up. His stellar performance earned him First Team All-State honors as a defensive back, along with First Team All-Region and District recognition both as a DB and kickoff returner.

While Geter has already checked out a few unofficial visits, now it’s all about Sherrone Moore stepping up his game. But the pitch has to be unforgettable—one that convinces Geter—Michigan is the perfect spot to step in and fill Will Johnson’s big shoes.
