Sherrone Moore, Michigan Set to Hand Dabo Swinney Recruiting Déjà Vu as Clemson Faces Major Flip Threat

5 min read

The 2024 season must have been a chapter that the Michigan Wolverines fans must want to delete from their memory. Courtesy? Thanks to Sherrone Moore. The Wolverines lost their glitz and glamor after the Jim Harbaugh era. No national title, no playoff ticket. But atleast Moore could save his seat by hunting down the No.1 quarterback commit, Bryce Underwood. While that was the first time that Brian Kelly got to taste Michigan head coach’s heist, for Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, by now, they are aware of this aggressive side of Moore. The Tigers are on the verge of facing a blow from Moore, ONCE AGAIN.

Moore might not gift the Wolverines a playoff ticket, nor could he protect the national title. But atleast he got that magic wand and his ABRACADRABRA spell landed them Underwood. Just kidding, it wasn’t just easy. The Michigan head coach went to great lengths to bring the quarterback home. And finally, dished out a hefty $12 million NIL check. And guess after seeing all this, who is trembling with fear? None other than Swinney. The Tigers have taken a dive straight into the portal to woo the 3-star cornerback from Knoxville (Tennessee), Shavar Young. Analyst Ethan McDowell came up with a big update, enough for Swinney to lose his goodnight’s sleep. On May 24, he tweeted, “Michigan flipped a Clemson commit last cycle and is looking to do the same with four-star DB Shavar Young .”

Shavar wrapped up his recruitment early. He had committed to Clemson last August. But going by the current trend, the players are following a ‘No feelings are final’ approach. And Moore makes the most use of this. While things were going on in first gear for Clemson and Shavar, things accelerated as Shavar started to meet the coaches. That’s when he met Michigan’s secondary coach LaMar Morgan. The other runners of the Shavar race are Georgia Tech, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, and SMU. Shavar has not walked on his commitment with the Tigers yet and even paid a visit to meet their new defensive coordinator, Tom Allen. But still things are inclining towards Moore’s Michigan. The reason?

Shavar took a visit to Ann Arbor before giving his words to Clemson. That’s when he developed a soft corner for the Wolverines solely because of their NFL pedigree. “They have a great football culture. They put guys in the league on defense like every year. You’ve seen this past draft. So many guys went to the league. They develop DBs at a very high level. They do it with some of the best in the country.” Right now, Moore’s program has been put on a timeout but they are heading towards the end of its recruiting communication restrictions.

In the meantime, Shavar will explore his fit in Moore’s defensive scheme and find out if there would be a path to early playing time. This recruitment process is catalyzed by Moore’s defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, who takes a personal role. As the cornerback shared, “He was talking about how Michigan is the best place to play. In the big house, you play in front of a lot of fans. You get big exposure and a big brand.” Last time, Swinney did not lock the doors properly and paid a huge cost to Moore. Is history going to repeat itself?

It’s not just about Shavar Young, as Sherrone Moore has a Clemson fixation

Well, we get the craze to land Shavar. A fresh talent with the No. 299 overall prospect ranking and the No. 17 cornerback and No. 8 player from the state of Tennessee in the 2026 class. Even though the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder had a buffet of more than 30 scholarship offers, Moore’s Michigan approached even when he was yet to hold the head coach’s seat. Yes, you read that right. Michigan offered Shavar all the way back in October 2022, when Steve Clinkscale was still the Wolverines’ DB coach.

Turns out that the problem is not with Shavar, but Moore’s squad has got that thing with Clemson. Maybe the flips from Swinney’s squad taste sweeter. They did it with 4-star safety Jordan Young. He had committed to the Tigers in November 2024. It took him one month, and in December 2024, he hit the ‘SWAP’ button and boarded Moore’s program. The reason? Jordan said, “The recruiting class wasn’t that good at Clemson. I was the only DB at the time, so I didn’t really see a bright future with that. Michigan was hitting up in the recruiting class, getting many guys that could help me and I can help them as well.” And guess what?

Sherrone Moore’s Clemson haul did not just stop at Jordan Young. His appointed secondary coach, LaMar Morgan, flipped multiple prospects in the 2025 cycle. The list included four-star cornerback Shamari Earls from Georgia and four-star safety Elijah Dotson from Pittsburgh. If anyone can pull a recruiting plot twist, it’s Dabo Swinney —but time is ticking.
