Bryce Underwood continues to dominate the Michigan news, with fans vehemently wondering if his spring practice led him to win the starting job at Ann Arbor. The former LSU commit is heavily rumored to headline the UM offense in 2025, but Moore has already made it clear that it won’t be a cakewalk out there. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what your high school stats look like, you must earn your prize through a dogfight with the other contender in the room, Mikey Keene.
The Fresno State transfer seems to pose a real challenge to Bryce Underwood. The senior has only one year of eligibility left on his card, making him an ideal stopgap for Underwood. He came to Ann Arbor with a lofty number, including 8,000 yards and 65 touchdowns in 39 games under his belt. So, his ability to impact the starting gig can never be questioned. But both the QBs come with their different sets of pros and cons. While Underwood, the No. 1 QB of the 2025 class, flexes a huge 6-4, 208-pound physique as a dual-threat guy who uses his legs to make plays. Keene stands 5-11, 200 pounds, a little shorter than Underwood but is more crafty than he is mobile.
As the first week of the spring is already underway, the head coach reflects on the current status of his $10 million investment. Moore deems his early arrival a plus for the program, as it will help him to get his feet wet better as soon as the regular season starts. Also, it offers the team the chance to be able to read him and re-shift things accordingly to bring out the best. “I think just early enrollees in general, it’s a great thing for the game and for those players to be able to come in. And… not only just for football, but for school, be able to handle school, be able to maneuver in school, and know where your classes are. But for him and all the quarterbacks, it’s been good,” Moore said in a post-spring ball press conference.
Bryce Underwood has already convinced Chip Lindsey with his performance. His indomitable love for the game made him believe that he was 100 percent ready to go for an official gig in the blue and maize. Moore subtly added to that belief, saying, “Adjusting to things and doing things a little bit differently, but he’s done well. He works his tail off. He’s in here late, in here early, and, you know, those guys have really worked hard to compete at that position.”
While Bryce Underwood’s growth will be on the watch going forward, Michigan and Sherrone Moore grab a massive win in the off-field affairs that can enable them to land many more Underwoods in the future, strengthening the depth chart like no other.
Michigan is winning in the competitive NIL market
The one that spearheaded the Bryce Underwood commitment, contributing a good amount to the overall NIL demand, has consistently been coming forward toward the financial boost of the state. Yes, the entities in question are Larry Ellison and his wife, Jolin.
Ellison, a software engineer turned media mogul, has been the steady backup of the Wolverines NIL fund for a while. Champions Circle, the main Michigan collective chairman, Nate Forbes, personally extended his heartfelt thanks to the Ellison couple after the school successfully launched Underwood. His wife, Jolin, being a proud Michigan alum, worked as extra fuel in the pursuit.
Now, in another massive announcement amidst the spring game buzz, James Yoder of the Michigan Football Report divulged, “If you’re Larry Ellison, if you sold 1 percent of your Oracle stock, it’d be about $2 billion, right? That means Michigan could give $50 million for the next 40 years. I was told that’s what he’s done. Not necessarily sold the stocking line like that. But the mission that the Ellison and you know, Jolin, his new wife, have pledged anywhere from $25 to $40 million in perpetuity as long as either one of them is alive.”
Michigan’s finances are in the safe hands. The offense will, however, look forward to Bryce Underwood’s antics going forward.
