Shedeur Sanders and Deion Sanders finished a 9-4 season and are looking for their prospective future. Shedeur Sanders wants to make the most of his NFL Draft prospects, while Deion Sanders is seemingly preparing for another improvement to his season at Colorado. But, for now, the focus is all on Shedeur, who is grabbing eyeballs for all the wrong reasons, it seems. From the ‘arrogance’ tag to the player being ‘not fit’ for the top pick, there are all kinds of rumors circling the internet.
The 6 foot 1 and 198 lbs veteran QB undoubtedly has all the abilities to make the top pick. His stats for the 2024 season look incredible, in which he threw for 4,134 yards at an impressive 74% completion rate. However, there are still concerns about his play-action abilities, as he is ranked 120th nationally in the play-action attempts made. His sack susceptibility and inability to sometimes evade defenders also saw a sharp increase in the sack rate (52 sacks in 2024). Add to that the concerns about his ‘attitude’ problem.
Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports talks about the curious case of Shedeur Sanders’ alleged arrogance. “People say look it’s system uh specific what coach and what system will he fit into just like Bo Nix last year. Like Bo Nix was kind of like Shedeur last year. You just have people saying well I don’t like the way you know came off in interviews or whatever he seems cocky he seems you know arrogant but people looked at Bo Nix and said he’s not a first-round pick, some people were assigning a mid-round value to him but ultimately it didn’t matter as long as he had someone who believed in him“.
Well, Bo Nix is surely an interesting case here. The new Broncos quarterback was just coming off an incredible season for Oregon just like Shedeur. He threw for 4,508 yards at a stellar 77.4% completion rate for 45 touchdowns. Coming into the draft class of 2024 he was selected in the first round despite criticisms about his abilities and attitude. And in just one season he has cemented his place as the starting quarterback for the Broncos. and has thrown for 3,775 yards in his rookie season. That being said, will Shedeur’s fate be the same?

Despite the comparisons to Bo Nix, Robinson also said an interesting thing about Shedeur. “I talked to two people who connected with him at the combine and they felt rubbed the wrong way”. ‘Rubbing the wrong way’ doesn’t make top draft picks, especially when you have a target on your back. In terms of analysts pointing out your weaknesses and constantly slipping you down in the draft projections. And mind you the draft projections do play a certain role in hyping up or even demoting a player from scouts’ eyes. Shedeur Sanders alleged ‘arrogant’ behavior doesn’t help in that in any way. Don’t make me pull behind the curtain to step in that thing…I’ll try my best to keep it on the high road, but I don’t know the address.”
These words by Deion Sanders speak volumes about the level of influence he still has in the NFL circles. Notably, Shedeur Sanders, in his NFL Combine interview, was dubbed to be ‘arrogant.’ By various coaches as reported in the media. He didn’t participate in the Combine drills and will look to perform in the pro-day of Colorado with Travis Hunter, Shilo Sanders (his brother) and co. But what exactly Shedeur had said in the combine that has created this much buzz?
“If you’re not trying to change the franchise or the culture, don’t get me,” Sanders said at the combine with a smirk on his face. “You should know history repeats itself over and over, and I’ve done it over and over, so there should be no question why an NFL franchise should pick me.” These words undoubtedly sound confident, but they also have the potential to upset many franchises if not interpreted correctly. Since then it seems Sanders’ draft stock also has seen a sharp decline.
Starting in the off-season Shedeur’s draft ranking was dubbed to be at least 1st or second. However, there were some doubts about his weaknesses, too. That may have landed him up to the fifth position, but not lower than that. But now, in the recent mock draft projections. His name has even slipped lower to lesser touted names like Jaxson Dart and even Jalen Milroe in some projections. The decline in the draft projections may have stemmed from his weaknesses. Like throwing in tight windows or his ‘attitude’ concerns. Can Shedeur rise above the criticisms and form his own legacy like Bo Nix?
