April 20, 2024, doesn’t feel too long, does it? Fast forward a year, and here we are again, with rematch talk finally heating up. After making peace with his former trainer, Eddy Reynoso, Ryan Garcia’s reunion with Canelo’s veteran trainer was short-lived. With Canelo Álvarez also deep in preparation for his own title fight against William Scull in Riyadh tomorrow, Reynoso simply couldn’t split his time, leaving Garcia to look elsewhere once again. As a result, once again, the Victorville native is sticking with ESPN’s 2022 Trainer of the Year, Derrick James (the same guy who helped guide him to a majority decision victory over Devin Haney last April, before it was overturned to a no-contest by the NYSAC.
On the other side, Devin Haney is keeping things close to home. For his “Fatal Fury” showdown with Jose Ramirez, like always, he has trained under his verbose father, Bill Haney. Now, with their respective fights going down at the world-famous intersection of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street, a lot is riding on both of them securing a win tonight—a victory here and the rematch is officially on. But before any punches are thrown, let’s not forget about Ryan Garcia’s PED controversy. After the VADA tests revealed the presence of Ostarine, a PED, in Garcia’s system, Haney slapped him with a lawsuit seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract in connection. So, how much did Ryan Garcia have to fork out to put all that behind him? Let’s break that down.
What was Devin Haney’s purse against Ryan Garcia?
Devin Haney isn’t letting anyone lowball his worth, especially not when it comes to the biggest payday of his career. Last year, after a post from thrillboxing claimed Haney made $35 million for his fight against Ryan Garcia (with Garcia reportedly pulling in $50 million), “The Dream” wasn’t having it. He reposted the claim on his Instagram story with a sharp clapback: “If you thought I made 35… Think again. Think bigger b-tch.”
Before the Ryan Garcia fight, Haney’s purses were nowhere near those numbers. He made $4 million for the Vasyl Lomachenko fight in May 2023 and $6 million for his win over Regis Prograis later that year. But after suffering a loss-turned-no-contest to Garcia in April, his stock took a bad hit. He even turned down a $1.5 million offer to defend his WBC title against Sandor Martin. This was the primary reason for Devin Haney filing a lawsuit against Ryan Garcia, as “Devin Haney suffered damages in that he suffered physical injury, reputational damage which will amount to millions of dollars, and emotional and mental distress,” the lawsuit alleged. So, let’s recap what all went down during the fight and then soon after.
Ryan Garcia pays Devin Haney a million for the weight miss
“Why would I force my self to make weight so I can be weak. Nah I’m here to win. That’s it,” Ryan Garcia had boldly declared after stepping off the scale on April 19th last year. And that mindset, whether defiant or strategic, cost him big. Just like how Chris Eubank Jr. had to cough up $500K for being just 0.05lb over ahead of the Conor Benn fight last month, Ryan Garcia also paid the price for missing weight. The day before, the two had entered into an agreement where Garcia, in a daring commitment, had agreed to pay Haney $500,000 for every pound he went above the weight. And when the weigh-in arrived, KingRy came in a full 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit while Haney made the weight.
But the two camps still decided to go ahead with the fight after Ryan Garcia decided to honor the bet. Though the payout was never fully revealed, Golden Boy Promotions soon confirmed that “Ryan has weighed in over his contractual weight. He will honor the handshake made at the final press conference yesterday. We have a fight.” Devin Haney followed up on X, stating, “Ryan honored the 500k per pound.” This means that Ryan Garcia must have paid $1.5 million to the 26-year-old for allowing the fight to go ahead as planned. Meanwhile, some accounts state Garcia forfeited $600,000 of his purse to Haney and not $ 1.5 million. Regardless, the move proved to be the biggest undoing for Devin Haney. With no limit on the weight, Garcia could now rehydrate to a much higher weight than his opponent, which he did. The size difference between the two on fight night was clearly an evidence to this.
So when it came out that Ryan Garcia had tested positive for Ostarine, the Devin Haney camp finally understood their mistake. But by then, the damage to his reputation was already done. After he pleaded guilty to the charges, the NYSAC fined Ryan Garcia $1.2 million, which would be awarded to his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, and an additional fine of $10,000, which was to be paid to the NYSAC. This left the Haney camp infuriated. Hence, they decided to take the matter to the District Court in New York in September, seeking 47% of all profits from the event. So, where does the suit stand as of now?
How much money did Haney get for settling the lawsuit with Garcia?
Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia just hit pause on their legal battle—for now. According to a legal document obtained by ESPN, both fighters have jointly asked a court to halt proceedings for 90 days as they work through a tentative settlement.
Sources told ESPN that both camps are working toward a rematch in the second half of 2025, if both fighters handle business tonight. Ryan Garcia has to get past Rolando Romero, while Devin Haney needs to defeat former world champion Jose Ramirez. If both men walk out of their respective fights with wins, it sets the stage perfectly for a blockbuster sequel. Haney even confirmed this in an interview earlier this month. “At the end of the day, we get the rematch in October, and so everything worked out,” Devin Haney said on Cigar Talks. “We do a fight, then it won’t be no lawsuit. We’ll drop the lawsuit.”
As for how much Ryan Garcia’s actually paying Devin Haney to settle the suit? That figure’s still under wraps. But if they manage to clear this up and meet in the ring again, one thing’s for sure—business is about to boom. With that said, what could Devin Haney potentially earn if the rematch with Ryan Garcia actually happens? What do you think?
