It took yet another injury blow for the Red Sox to pull the trigger. Yes, the moment fans have long anticipated is here. Roman Anthony is officially heading to Fenway Park after months of speculation, mounting hype, and growing frustration over his prolonged stay in the minors. But what truly stands out isn’t just the timing of his call-up. It’s Anthony’s first reaction that’s turning heads.
Well, the story took a decisive turn when the Red Sox placed right fielder Wilyer Abreu on the injured list with a left oblique strain. That left a glaring hole in Boston’s outfield. Manager Alex Cora revealed once it became clear Abreu would be sidelined for a few days, the front office had to act. And why not when you’ve got a top talent in your reserves?
“It’s not the perfect way of doing it, but he (Anthony) is here. We’ll use him the right way and help him with the adjustments that come with being a big leaguer,” Cora said.
Without Abreu, the Red Sox would have entered a key series against the Rays really shorthanded and they couldn’t afford that. However, now that Anthony is here, all eyes turn to him. But, what was the man’s first reaction to his call-up?
“I think it was racing more a few weeks ago, when I heard Marcelo was going up, it was kind of racing for Marcelo, and now, just like I just calling my family letting them know, and it’s exciting, it’s what you dream of,” Anthony was quoted as saying by NESN.
Ahh, surprising! Anthony might have been over the moon when Mayer was called up. But was that a bigger moment for him than his own promotion? Maybe that was the moment when he started anticipating his promotion. And why not? When you are going all guns blazing in the minors, your time has to come. And it has come for Anthony! But what will be his position in the Sox’s line-up?
Well, the 21-year-old seems open to the idea of playing anywhere. “I will try and help the team win in whatever way I can,” he added.
At this point, we are not sure if Anthony will be Boston’s new right fielder or not. But regardless of where he plays or hits, his debut will be historic. For the first time, Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell, the organization’s much-hyped Big Three, will be in the same major league lineup!
All three of them broke the door open with utter domination in the minors.
Roman Anthony totally dominated the minor league
The Red Sox selected Roman Anthony as the 79th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. And it didn’t take long for the Florida native to climb the organizational ladder. The following year, he was named the Red Sox Minor League Hitter of the Year, slashing .294 with 12 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 41 runs in just 54 games! Now that’s how a top talent announces his arrival!
The story doesn’t end here.
Anthony’s growth continued in 2024. He was promoted to Triple-A Worcester in August and later earned an invite to major league spring training.
This year, the 6-foot-3 slugger put up a strong case for a call-up, hitting .288 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs over 58 games in Worcester. Currently, over 303 career minor league games, Anthony is averaging .285, with an OPS of .402. Add to that his 42 home runs and 170 RBIs, and most would agree these numbers reflect star potential.
Over the last weekend, Anthony hit a 497-foot grand slam in Worcester that just catapulted him to the forefront. The fans would hope he now carries his form to the majors as well.
