Red Sox’s 25YO Baseman Makes Emotional Confession After Costly Error in White Sox Heartbreaker

5 min read

To lose a game is one thing, but to lose against a team that’s already struggling? That’s a huge blow, and it’s something that the Boston Red Sox had to face. This is the same team that most thought would do something phenomenal this time around. They moved from their farm system and invested in the off-season after all. But so far, the investment has amounted to nothing.

Friday night was a mess for Boston. Five errors, eleven runs allowed, and just one run scored, against the Chicago White Sox! Now there is not one player who can be pinpointed as to take the blame as most were out of sync. But one error did end up being the nail in the coffin of that game and it was by Triston Casas.

The 25-year-old first baseman messed up big time. In the fourth inning, he misplayed a grounder that could have ended the inning. Instead, Casas bobbled the ball and didn’t even record a single out. Then Chicago took full advantage, and what followed was a nightmare come true. Chicago managed two straight two-out hits and with that turned a 2-0 lead into a 6-0 bout. After the game, Casas did admit to the mistakes.

“Just a play that’s got to be made… pretty much changed the course of the game for the worse… next time it comes, I’ll make the adjustment.”

Casas said, “Just a play that’s got to be made that wasn’t. It’s tough when you’re not scoring runs to play bad defense. That leads to losses. It’s just something we’ve got to clean up. It has been an issue for the first couple of games of the season, but I have confidence we’re going to do better moving forward and getting the bats going as well. That’s going to help.” While the confession helps, the fact is the damage is done.

This was most probably the sloppiest game by Boston and also it was their fifth multi-error game. Manager Alex Cora last time had shown confidence about Triston Casas improving. But the reality is- he is not and it’s not just this game he funked! He is hitting just .176 on the year and went 1 for 4 on Friday. Even then, Casas says that he isn’t panicking. Casas feels that his swing is just right and the timing is there, but he is just missing the hittable pitches. Plus, he even mentioned that his hand-eye coordination isn’t at the place it should be. For a player that Cora said is improving, he sure has a lot of issues. Isn’t it?

Through the 15 games, the Boston Red Sox have committed 19 errors. If you look through history books, it’s their worst start defensively since 1996! Right now Boston’s defense is ice-cold. Even though Casas is not hiding from it, he will have to get over this slump. Because right now even Cora is done defending the team that is walking in the same route like before.

Alex Cora is not defending the Boston Red Sox anymore

Big names joined this off-season like Alex Bregman and Garett Crochet. So of course, people expect more, and when expectations are not met, fingers will be pointed. After watching Boston lose out to the White Sox, Boston Red Sox legend, Jim Rice lost his temper. He simply called out the team, saying, “You’ve got to make the routine plays. It’s not difficult…” Ouch, this is a gut punch for the team. And he isn’t wrong. Boston’s errors are déjà vu of what happened last season, where they had 115 errors.

Even Alex Cora, who usually doesn’t speak much about the mistakes, couldn’t help but admit the team’s poor performance. “It’s a horrible night. We didn’t execute today. It’s not about effort—it’s execution. And we didn’t do it in any aspect of the game.” And he speaks for everyone because the White Sox came into the game having lost eight straight games. Yet, they won over Boston in such a manner. Bad defense, bats didn’t show up, and the rhythm simply was not there.

Now it is predicted that the White Sox are on pace for another 100-loss season. And the Boston Red Sox have six of their next nine games against them. So the odds are in their favor; they simply have to tap into their power. Cora, although disappointed, isn’t panicking, saying, “We’ve got to be better. It’s not about potential anymore. It’s about execution.” And they sure need to redial and reevaluate.
