Rangers Star Sends Candid Message as NHL Tradeline Nears End

4 min read

Okay, so we all know the NHL trade deadline is basically the hockey version of reality TV drama, ending on March 7th—and this year, the Rangers decided to shake things up big time. They shipped out one defenseman and a left winger to Colorado, and in return? They got Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan, and a couple of draft picks to sweeten the deal.

And just when everyone was busy hitting up HockeyDB to look up Calvin de Haan’s numbers, B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) jumped in with a clip that clarified it all. Straight from the source too: “If everyone’s on my HockeyDB right now, my stats aren’t too sexy,” said Calvin de Haan. “But my underlying numbers and stuff, though, the fancy stuff, has been pretty good for most of the season. And maybe that’s something, sometimes it doesn’t maybe match the eye test just by my style of play and just trying to play reliable hockey.”

For those keeping track, de Haan has bounced around like a puck in a defensive zone scramble. He penned down his signature on the one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on October 1, 2022, and then after that, next up was a one-year deal with Tampa Bay on July 2, 2023. Later on July 1, 2024, he signed yet another one-year contract; this time it was with Colorado, only for the Avalanche to flip him to the Rangers, alongside Parssinen, in exchange for Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey.

But let’s talk numbers because, well, Calvin’s HockeyDB confession was kinda warranted. His 2024-25 stat line is giving… not great. In 45 games, he’s got 0 goals, 8 assists, and 8 points, with a -7 plus/minus rating. Career-wise, it’s a little better if you squint—677 games, 24 goals, 125 assists, and 149 points, with a career plus/minus of -9. So yeah, de Haan knew exactly what he was saying with that quote—and now the pressure’s on.

From rookie of the year to trade bait — The Calvin de Haan roller coaster

Look, before you dunk on de Haan too hard, let’s not forget—this guy’s got hardware. Looking back, Calvin was that guy. He was CCHL Rookie of the Year in 2007-08. In the following season, 2008-09, he upped his ante and was selected to play in the CHL Top Prospects Game, earned himself a place at the OHL All-Star Game, and was chosen for the OHL First All-Rookie Team.

On the international stage, de Haan did far more than just sit on the bench. He represented Canada, helping his country in the U20 World Junior Championship silver wins for both 2009-10 and 2010-11, and at later years helped Team Canada in taking the silver medal at the World Championships in 2016-17.

Fast forward to 2025, and it’s been… a grind. The last five games paint a pretty clear picture of the struggle. There’s been just one lonely assist to show for it, coming in the game against the Predators. Outside of that? Four straight games without a single point—no goals, no assists, nothing. Even the plus-minus column, which can sometimes mask offensive slumps, doesn’t offer much comfort. A +1 here, an even night there, and a -1 tossed in for good measure. It’s not disastrous, but the Rangers will be expecting a little more than that out of him.

And while the stats aren’t quite screaming Norris Trophy, the story here is bigger than that. The Rangers didn’t trade for him to set the world on fire—they needed a stopgap defender after shipping Lindgren out. Calvin de Haan’s job isn’t to go viral; it’s to eat minutes, block shots, and not blow up the game plan. Add in Parssinen (who’s only 24 and very versatile position-wise), and this might end up looking like a shrewd bit of business in a couple of weeks.

So yeah, Calvin de Haan’s stats might not be sexy, but this move? It’s all about surviving now to build for later. Welcome to trade deadline szn.
