Back at the podium for his third season leading the Buffaloes, Deion Sanders didn’t just look healthier; he looked unshaken. The cowboy attire fit a little looser, and the smile came with more weight behind it. But beneath that usual Prime swagger was a story that no playbook could’ve prepared him for. Sanders revealed that just months ago, he was quietly battling aggressive bladder cancer. The kind that forces you to write a will for your kids because the odds say you might not make it.
Doctors removed his bladder, rebuilt a new one, and for a stretch, even he wasn’t sure what came next. He kept it quiet. He kept moving. And in the middle of that chaos, hospital rooms, surgeries, prayers—there was one voice that kept showing up on the other end of the line, checking in with uncanny consistency. Someone who never stopped asking, ‘How’s your health, man?’
Randy Moss, who just beat cancer, was one of the people who called Coach Prime every day. He prayed for him every day. And he, along with his wife, gave Coach Prime some advice. “Let me tell you something,” Deion Sanders said, “Randy Moss… Randy Moss called me every other day to make sure I was straight. Randy Moss prayed for me. He and his wife told me what I need to be doing.
“He’s gone through some things very similar. But Randy Moss, man, I love him to life, love him more than ever. I prayed he told me he was going to come to the game this year. I prayed that, but he gave me so much strength and so much guidance and so much love, respect, and appreciation. Thank you, Randy. I really appreciate you. I really do.” The two NFL legends—now both cancer survivors—share a quiet but powerful bond off the field.
Throughout Sanders’ grueling battle, Moss emerged as a steady source of strength, checking in regularly, offering advice, and reminding him what truly mattered. Moss advised the Buffaloes’ head coach from his own tough experience as the NFL legend dealt with a health scare just a few months ago. Back in December 2024, Moss revealed that doctors found cancer outside his bile ducts, which affected his liver function. Moss revealed that he underwent a six-hour procedure on Thanksgiving Day, forcing him to miss his usual ESPN broadcast duties.
But the silver lining? Well, earlier this month, ESPN announced that the Hall of Famer is returning to a full-time role on “Sunday NFL Countdown,” as per The Athletic. Besides, Coach Prime now expects Randy Moss to appear during one of the Buffaloes’ games this year. But the battle isn’t over yet for Deion Sanders. He’s still facing some challenges in his day-to-day life.
Deion Sanders and his grandson have the same problems now
The beginning of this week turned out to be a shocking one for the Buffaloes’ fans, as Coach Prime revealed that he battled an aggressive form of bladder cancer. However, following his surgery, Deion Sanders is fit and healthy to return for year 3 as the Buffaloes’ head coach, as his oncologist has considered him cured. That means we’re going to see Coach Prime on the sidelines this year, sure. But deep down, the 57-year-old head coach is still facing day-to-day life problems.
“Like it’s a whole life change, like I can’t and I’m gonna be transparent,” he said, “I can’t pee like I used to pee. It’s totally different… I have to have been told like it’s a totally different life. I mean, thank God. I’m now, I’m done deep. I depend on depend, if you know what I mean. Like, I cannot control my bladder. So, I get up and go to the bathroom, already four-five times a night, but then I’m sitting up there, waking up, you know, like my grandson, we’re in the same thing. We just say, we got the same problem right now,” he joked.
The head coach confirmed that he’s now joking about sudden changes in his life after the surgery, but if he’s honest, it’s a real thing, it’s a tough thing, and it’s a complicated thing to tackle. He observed that there are a lot of people out there who are dealing with the same problems as him. But Sanders urged all those people to stop being ashamed of it, and let’s deal with it.
Safe to say, just as Randy Moss offered heartfelt advice to Deion Sanders during his darkest hours, he’s now extending that same wisdom to others facing similar storms.
