On a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option! The Las Vegas Raiders hired Pete Carroll to solve their coaching issues before 2025. However, Carroll wasn’t only the Raiders’ choice. As per some reports, the Dallas Cowboys also had an interest in him. But the black and silver sealed the deal early. And then a day later, the Cowboys announced the hire of Brian Schottenheimer. However, that hiring wasn’t just a coincidence or the result of a positive interview. It was more than that!
Jon Machota, who covers the Cowboys, shared a conversation that Pete Carroll had with Jerry Jones. When the 82-year-old was juggling with the options for head coach, it was the Raiders’s HC, who came up to help him in his decision—the decision of choosing the right coach for the team after Mike McCarthy’s exit.
The post from the reporter on X reads, “New Raiders coach Pete Carroll on new Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer and his phone conversation with Jerry Jones about Schottenheimer: He is ready. He’s been waiting for this opportunity for a number of years. I just told (Jerry Jones) all of the positive stuff about Brian, the stuff we’d been through together, and the confidence I had in him… Tried to reassure him because it sounded like he was really in the lead position to get that job. I was trying to help Jerry feel good about it too because he was starting to get ready for it. I was glad that I had a chance to help him.” So, that wisdom was behind Jones’s most debated decision.

Brian Schottenheimer worked under Pete Carroll during the Seahawks’ tenure. The newly minted Cowboys’ HC was the offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2020 in Seattle. He helped the offense a lot. It was the same time when Russell Wilson produced the sixth-highest scoring attack (26.9 points per game) in the league. Hence, Carroll is just mesmerized by Schottenheimer and wants his friend to get this big chance.
So, when Pete Carroll got a call from Jerry Jones in January, he didn’t miss a chance. The Cowboys owner revealed that he wanted to talk about Brian Schottenheimer in that call. In addition, Jones also pitched the HC role to him. Why? It’s because Carroll checked all the boxes of Jones—Super Bowl champ, veteran coach, widely respected. But Carroll shut that down. Instead of pitching himself, he spent the call hyping up his former OC. This led to a big marriage for Schottenheimer. His message worked wonders for the former OC.
But not only Pete Carroll is sending strong messages for his opponent. His player too is doing somewhat similar for the Cowboys – hyping up his opponent.
Pete Carroll’s Maxx Crosby called his fellow mate GOAT?
On Feb 21, Cowboys’ star offensive guard Zack Martin decided to retire from the NFL. He was arguably their best offensive lineman, who isn’t replaceable easily. In his 11 seasons with the franchise, he made into 9 Pro Bowls. However, the 34-year-old suffered an ankle injury that eventually required surgery. Hence, he decided to hang up his cleats at the end. But his legacy won’t die for sure, as many players came in to hype up the guard. Pete Carroll’s Maxx Crosby is also one among them.
His retirement news came as a shocker for Crosby. However, he collected his emotions well to hype up Martin. The defensive end shared a post on his X, featuring Martin’s graphic, and wrote: “Ultimate Competitor. Loved Going To War Against You, First Ballot HOF. Enjoy Retirement Brother.”
As Crosby alluded to, Zack Martin will probably be the Hall of Famer for the Cowboys. Jerry Jones’s team will miss him, especially when they decided to bring Brian Schottenheimer into the facility. Nevertheless, the 2025 season will be interesting for both the teams – Raiders and Cowboys—thanks to their newly minted-coaches!
