Quinn Ewers’ shenanigans continue taking center stage in the draft conversation. Of course, not as the best QB prospect out there to hit the pro, but as the one bearing the most roller coaster turns and twists in the ride. Ewers’ Texas legacy is out in question after he failed to cap off the season as one of his best under the center. Quinn was fully healthy for only a couple of games last season. But then a double injury in the oblique muscle and the ankle shook him up. Despite the challenges, the former Longhorns signal caller managed to rack up 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns in his tumultuous final year. But the stock seemed to be stuck in the same average lane.
From a high school breakout to an NFL draft back runner, the journey encapsulated how volatile and unpredictable the game really is. Quinn’s legacy in Austin was never a question. But his ability to protect himself from random bumps from the defenders was. The injury history depicted a long-standing knack for taking tears. Quinn had never really recovered from his hurt last season. But with his steady spirit, he continued to bail in the field against Oklahoma following a two-game skip.
The performance was expected to suffer. But Sarkisian praised how resilient his boy is to still be relevant under the center. That’s a solid debate. Quinn kept on fighting with his limited physicality, but the NFL knew no logic except the films. The tendency to fall victim to a mishap can come off as a real red flag to the scouts. Yahoo Sports’ Dane Brugler broke down a unique contradiction in his resume. “He’s just a very calm guy. He doesn’t get affected by anything. I think that just speaks to his mentality, which is a big thing. If Quinn Ewers could stay healthy, I think we’d be. I think he’d firmly go top 100 and be a guy that people liked more,” Brugler said. “It’s just he gets b—-d up a lot, and that really affects him, and he’ll play through it sometimes to his credit. But it doesn’t matter like in the NFL, you have to play hurt and, you know, if that’s affecting, that’s just not going to work.”
NFL teams are too elite to afford any of their QBs not reaching their full potential, and that too for an injury fallback. While it’s the major drawback that can jeopardise Ewer’s NFL dream, it’s not the only one. When it’s easier to blame all his shortcomings on the two back-to-back injuries, in reality, Quinn wouldn’t be that elite either, even without those odds.
Losing pocket presence remains a glaring loophole in his traits. Also, there has been a very lingering feeling that Ewers isn’t an NFL-ready decision-maker. Seconding those narratives, Dan continued, “He’s not a big-time athlete. He’s not going to threaten the defense with his legs. He will drop his eyes sometimes. Sometimes the pressure will impact his decision. So, there are things that he still needs to grow and get better at, but I think there’s enough.”
Among 100 weaknesses, Quinn has the warrior’s spirit to fight through all and get better. If you really get drafted under a good stewardship and get some time to adjust, he can still be one of those NFL guys that history bows down to. “If you allow him to develop, he has the mentality for it, and so, I think he has the traits. He has the mentality. I would want to develop him if I could get him in the third round,” the journalist kept singing the intangibles while soft-guessing a draft spot.
However, it seems the Texas QB doesn’t bother much about the team’s calculative viewpoint of him. He is here to enjoy the process and let the flow decide the glow.
Quinn Ewers showcases a nonchalant attitude toward his draft future
When Quinn Ewers severely stumbled with the ball last year, many wouldn’t want him to make a pro move right at that point. While he couldn’t be there in Austin, as Arch Manning‘s clock was already ticking, veterans asked him to consider other million-dollar offers on his table.
But the guy glides differently. He doesn’t want to make his Texas legacy non-exclusive in his collegiate career. He started the college stint with the Horns and wanted to write it off with them and only them. However, he never blamed the stars for whatever he had undergone in his Texas days at all. Rather, Quinn sees those turbulent experiences as a stepping stone to his top-tier mental strength and tenacity.
When it comes to the draft, the kid isn’t only thinking about getting landed in a big pond. Not at all. Rather, he wants to relish the draft day vibe, the culture, the aura in full swing. “Draft night, there’s just going to be a lot of emotion, a lot of happiness. Going to be around my family, some of my loved ones, and friends, just to be able to experience all that together,” Ewers said in an emotional documentary teaser dropped by NFL Network. “I’m a big relationship guy. I love having relationships with my loved ones, you know, just have an amazing support group and for them to be there with me and experiencing that with me… think we’re obviously gonna remember that for a lifetime.”
But don’t take the calmness for timidity. He still deems himself a catch for big teams. His argument? “My poise and composure in big moments.” We will see how the rest of the draft saga pans out for the former Texas poster boy, edging forward.
