Quinn Ewers’ Injury Concerns Trigger Draft Analyst’s Clear Warning to Seahawks Amid Sam Howell Trade Rumors

4 min read

Quinn Ewers has been ‘the guy’ for the Longhorns. There’s no doubt about that. Before he started under the center in Austin, Steve Sarkisian’s team wasn’t seeing the riches that their fans have become familiar with in the last three years. Playoff appearances, championship games, and whatnot! But what is making critics iffy about Ewers is his health. The former Texas QB1 is going to the draft with a collegiate career boasting 9,128 yards, 68 TDs, and a pass completion percentage of 65%. Despite his significant impact in college football, his prospects in the NFL appear to be diminishing. CBS Sports’ latest mock draft places him with the Seahawks, but an analyst is raising some concerns for the QB.

Even while discussing Ewers’ best qualities, one can’t help but ignore how frequently he gets injured. It’s something he’s suffered from since high school. But he powers through it all. Before his outing against Michigan, Ewers tore an oblique. He’s missed some games in 2023 and 2024. But he didn’t turn away from Michigan in a game that many regarded to be his best. He turned up to play with an injury, and it brought forth results. However, will that mindset be of much help in the NFL, particularly the Seahawks?

In an April 19 episode of On Texas Football, Steve Palazzolo drew a parallel between Ewers and Bo Nix. The latter, after starting out rough, showed improvement and was predicted to have some success in the NFL. “I thought Ewers was on that trajectory before the injuries,” he said. “He’s also been injured three straight years, you know, parts of three straight years. So, I think all of those things have to be taken into account.” You don’t really want a QB, regardless of the position in the depth chart, to be that injury-prone.

Also, there’s another key area where Ewers falters compared to the rest of his contemporaries. “I don’t think he’s as toolsy as the, you know, one of the best QB prospects of all time,” Palazzolo said. “[If] he was cannon for an arm and extremely athletic, you would say, ‘Hey, he’s battled these injuries. He’s shown some progress. Let’s get him in.’ Even Jalen Milroe, with his glaring flaws, still has a one-up over him because of his powerful arm and impeccable mobility. Ewers doesn’t have much from his side.

Ewers has so far dropped down the list and is now regarded as a Day 2 or even a Day 3 pick. Seattle is not in urgent need of a QB either, now that they have Sam Darnold on board. However, the Seahawks’ terms give them a way to ditch Darnold if he performs poorly this season. In that situation, CBS Sports says Ewers can look to go to the Seahawks on Day 3 as Round 4 pick no. 137. This time, it truly looks like the Seahawks are invested in shaking things up with the roster.

Aside from Quinn Ewers, another shakeup is afoot at Seattle

Seattle made a gutsy move by sending Geno Smith early in the offseason to Las Vegas. Now, they are letting go of another one of their signal callers. That player would be Sam Howell, for whom the Seahawks are “open to trading.” Howell had started for Washington in 2023 and produced 3,941 yards and 21 touchdowns. At Seattle, he’s made only 25 snaps.

With the addition of Drew Lock, things take another shape for Howell. GM John Schneider says that Lock and Howell will have to fight each other for that backup spot. “I think it’s a great situation…. We have four guys that we really like.” But Howell can hope to land at better pastures, given that the draft’s QB class is not very strong except for only a handful of names.

USA Today wrote that Ewers stands a chance of going to the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota, or New Orleans Saints. Miami, in particular, is in more glaring need of a quarterback, as they only have to.

How do you think Quinn Ewers will face the draft? Where would you expect him to be drafted, and at what point of the draft?
