Quinn Ewers’ Draft Dreams Hit a Wall as Injury and QB Talent Pool Overshadow Him

5 min read

How the turntables!! In the 2025 NFL Draft, the pro league suitors are spoiled when it comes to quarterback options available. You name them – Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and the list goes on. Yes, all these young chaps are basking in all the hype. If you are true college football fans, you must be quick enough to identify that someone missed the hype train. That’s none other than the former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. Can you call it sheer bad luck, or does the 22-year-old simply run short of talent? The first option is likely to be the reason. Who is the main villain in Ewers’ story? The Injury Gods.

The quarterback was a 5-star phenom once. Well, did he prove himself to his star status in Texas? Definitely! In his three years in Steve Sarkisian’s squad, the Longhorns quarterback came up with a total of 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns. Last season itself, Ewers gifted 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns. Was that a cakewalk for him to put such a feat? Definitely not! That’s because he kept on catching bad juju, thanks to his injuries. By now, the quarterback might have made peace with the fact that he is susceptible to injuries. Ewers missed time with injuries in all three of his seasons as the starting quarterback at Texas. Even during his final high school season at Southlake (Texas) Carroll, he missed games with a core injury. And how could 2024 be special?

He got a torn oblique injury during Texas’ Week 2 game against Michigan. Despite the injury, Ewers played the next week against UTSA, but left the field clutching at his side after throwing a pass. Now that he is ready to take off to the NFL, it’s really a concerning factor that might lead suitors to hit the ‘HOLD’ button while counting on Ewers. As his draft stock hits a wall, a news portal tried to gift some hype to Ewers.

On April 19, SleeperNFL tweeted a throwback clip from 2023, when Texas played against Alabama. The caption read, “Quinn Ewers needs to be talked about more in the 2025 NFL Draft. Played most of the season injured, but when healthy showed 1st Round talent .” It was one of the quarterback’s best plays. He turned heads with his 44-yard throw to Xavier Worthy

What better timing to brush up on some old memories to see how big of a talent Ewers has been in college? The former No. 1 overall recruit has reportedly recovered from his injury. So, while most quarterbacks on the portal opted for on-field drills, he made the most of the NFL Combine. Even though he did not run the 40-yard dash, he had put up a solid performance on his throws, going 16 of 22. While struggling with early throws and accuracy on out routes, Ewers showed deft touch on deep balls. But that’s not enough for Ewers to land a ticket to be an early pick.

How Quinn Ewers’ woes are shaping his NFL Draft story?

Analyst Todd McShay noted that Quinn Ewers seems to check all the boxes of a first-round prospect, yet is expected to fall to the fourth round or later. He tweeted, “These are now the little things that show up on tape that help explain the why.” Well, we all know, the pro league brings up 100 times more pressure. But in college itself, Ewers gave up while working under pressure. As Pro Football Focus analyst Nick Akridge highlighted, “Ewers exhibits consistent discomfort under pressure.” Not just this. There seems to be some loopholes in his gameplay too.

“He frequently abandons clean pockets, leading to the 11th-most quarterback-faulted pressures in 2024. He also tends to take numerous sacks when the opposing pass rush eventually collapses the pocket, resulting in a shaky 23.2% pressure-to-sack rate,” said the analyst. CBS Sports’ latest mock draft places him with the Seattle Seahawks. However, Ewers’ fate in Mike Macdonald’s program depends on a lot of ifs and buts.

He has so far dropped down the list and is now regarded as a Day 2 or even a Day 3 pick. On the other hand, the Seahawks are good to go without landing a quarterback immediately, as they can count on Sam Darnold. Everything now depends on the player. If Darnold fails to live up to the mark, Seattle would not think twice before getting rid of him. Imagine telling your 2023 self that Quinn Ewers wouldn’t hear his name until Round 4—would you have bought it?
