Patrick Mahomes’ Undrafted Brother Finally Announces Chiefs’ Call for Rookie Minicamp

5 min read

The NFL draft is done and dusted, and that means only one thing. It’s that time of year again—rookie minicamp at Arrowhead. From May 3 to 5, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ facility buzzed with 87 fresh faces, including 60 tryout hopefuls, all eager to make their mark. This is where late-round picks and UDFAs hustle through drills, crash-course the playbook, and try to prove they belong.

See it like a jam-packed weekend of first impressions and make-or-break reps at Arrowhead. And it looks like the Chiefs are keeping it all in the family. The reason? Well, among the 87 fresh faces ahead of the 2025 season, one name stands out. And it’s none other than Graham Walker—(TE) the half-brother of the Chiefs’ star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

Walker will take part in the Chiefs’ rookie mini-camp. Walker is also the son of Patrick Mahomes Sr. However, Rice University’s tight end grew up in Vermont with his mom, Jessamyn Walker, and stepfather, Gerry Howatt. The TE transferred to Rice University last year after spending three years at Brown University, an Ivy League School.

Walker’s best season came during his freshman year at Brown University, where he caught 53 passes for 658 yards and six touchdowns. Before transferring to Rice University, he totaled 127 catches for 1,496 yards and 15 touchdowns while playing at Brown. Though he intended to play a wide receiver at Rice, he transitioned to the tight end. In his last season at Rice, the guy had an underwhelming season where he caught 24 passes for 252 yards.

Right after that went down, Walker declared for the 2025 NFL draft at 6-foot-3 and 227 pounds. However, he wasn’t selected during the draft in Green Bay last week. If Walker manages to impress in the minicamp, he could likely earn a spot on the Chiefs’ practice squad. To make it spicier, the TE recently admitted that his half-brother, Mahomes, has been keeping an eye on his game.

“I know Patrick has been watching the games, and he’s reached out and said good things that I’ve been doing,” Walker told Seven Days. “When someone who’s accomplished so much can say you’re doing well, it really feels good.” Though the odds are low, let’s just say if all goes well for Patrick Mahomes’ half-brother, he might find himself in the Chiefs’ tight end room with Travis Kelce.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Chiefs’ rookie mini camp, Andy Reid and the team’s execs just gave their verdict on their draft picks.

Patrick Mahomes’ team addressed its most significant needs in the draft

“I think Brett (Veach) and his gang have done a good job of bringing in some great football players, both drafted and undrafted,” Andy Reid noted after the Chiefs snagged some key players in the draft. Following the Super Bowl LIX loss, where offensive line vulnerabilities were exposed, the Chiefs prioritized bolstering their protection for Patrick Mahomes. And they addressed this concern in the NFL draft, when they drafted one of the best offensive linemen. We’re talking about Ohio State’s Josh Simmons.

And get this, in the first six games of his 2024 season, Simmons didn’t even allow a single sack. If not for a patellar tendon injury, the guy would’ve had the best season of his career. “We felt like he was a true left tackle,” Reid stated after they picked him in the first round. But if you’re thinking, KC just patched up their O-line and called it a day—yeah, not even close.

In fact, KC picked DT Omarr Norman-Lott, with the 63rd overall pick, DE Ashton Gillotte, with the 66th overall pick, and CB Nohl Williams, with the 85th overall pick. “I understand why they took Norman-Lott — bigger-school guy, more actual pass-rush juice,” one exec said. “The corner they got from Cal (Nohl Williams in the third round) was a really good pick. He will be a good starter, a good No. 2 corner. He is smart, can play nickel, can play safety, great character, team captain. That’s a double in the third round.”

On the flip side, if we take a look at the Chiefs’ UDFA, they picked WR Elijhah Badger. The WR from Florida, who was the leading receiver for Arizona State in both 2022 and 2023. After transferring to Florida in 2024, the guy had 806 receiving yards. Then there’s TE Jake Briningstool from Clemson. The 6-foot-5, 241-pound TE, who tallied 99 receptions for 1,028 yards and 12 touchdowns in the last couple of seasons.

Besides, the Chiefs reportedly signed 16 UDFAs after the draft wrapped up. Safe to say that Patrick Mahomes’ brother Graham Walker is just one of 87 guys heading into Chiefs rookie minicamp. Now it’s all about who actually shows up and leaves a mark.
