Outgoing Eagles Star’s Emotional Farewell to Philadelphia as Nick Sirianni Eyes $6M Replacement to Boost Jalen Hurts

Mekhi Becton’s NFL journey has been anything but smooth. One minute, he’s a first-round pick with a sky-high ceiling, and the next, injuries and setbacks have him fighting just to stay on the field. When the Jets moved on, Philly gave him a shot—but not in the way anyone saw coming. Instead of reclaiming his spot as a dominant tackle, he had to switch things up on the O-line. And guess what?

The guy didn’t just survive—he thrived. And just when you thought that Becton had finally found his groove… boom—another plot twist. After moving to guard and winning the Super Bowl with the Eagles, Becton signed a two-year $20 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. On his way out of Philly, Becton shared a farewell note as he thanked the Eagles for making him a better player.

Standing at a towering 6’7” and weighing over 350 pounds, the 25-year-old tackle turned right guard first thanked the Eagles’ O-line in his farewell note. “To the offensive line, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to go battle with. Thank you for welcoming me in and for setting the standard, for showing me what it truly means to prepare…” he wrote.

And that’s not all. After transitioning to the Eagles’ O-line, Becton had one of the best season of his career. One of the reasons why he thanked Eagles’ offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland for making a true difference in his career. “Coach Jeff Stoutland, thank you,” Becton wrote. “From Day One you believed in me, even before I fully believed in myself, you saw something in me, challenged me and pushed me to reach a level I never knew I had. You made me a better player, but more importantly, a better man.”

Becton entered pro football after the Jets drafted him with 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The catch? Well, after four seasons in New York, the 25-year-old turned out to be a major disappointment. The reason’s pretty obvious. The guy missed more games than he played for the Jets. However, after landing in Philly, Becton recorded a career-reviving season with the Eagles. He started 15 games and helped Philly lift their second Super Bowl. Fast forward to now, and he’s leaving the Eagles.

“To the entire Eagles organization, thank you for taking a chance on me,” he further wrote. “Thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be a part of something special. Winning a Super Bowl with this team, in this city, is something I’ll never forget.” Oh yeah, winning in Philly was surely a memory that he’ll never forget. I mean, if there’s one thing that Philly fans are know for, it’s passion and energy for the Eagles. That’s why Mekhi Becton was honored to play in front of them.

“And to the city of Philadelphia, thank you. The passion, the energy, the support—it’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Playing in front of you was an honor and I’ll always carry a piece of Philly with me,” he added, while concluding his note. That said, Becton is now parting ways with the Eagles and is ready to join the Chargers.

As for Nick Sirianni and the Eagles… well, let’s just say they’re looking for a potential replacement for Becton.

Nick Sirianni could sign 5-time pro bowler to replace Mekhi Becton

After winning the Super Bowl this year, Nick Sirianni and Co. are surely looking to bolster their roster for Jalen Hurts. Well, it looks like the head coach is cooking something. Because let’s be realright after the free agency kicked off, the team allowed certain players to look for other options in 2025. And yeah, Mekhi Becton was one of them. But the big question’s still looming over the fans’ heads: who’s going to replace Becton?

The way things are shaping, looks like the Eagles are back to square one for their right guard position. First, they signed Becton last year, and now? Well, if reports are to be believed, general manager Howie Roseman and the team are projected to have a training camp for the right guard. And that’s where Cory Woodroof of USA TODAY’s For the Win comes in.

You see, Woodroof believes that five-time Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff could be a better solution and a cheaper option for Nick Sirianni and the Eagles in 2025. Scherff could slot in at right guard for the Eagles, who just lost Mekhi Becton to the Los Angeles Chargers. The team brought in guard Kenyon Green as a reclamation project, but Scherff provides more stability,” he reported. Well, he’s not wrong.

I mean, Scherff just had a couple of frustrating seasons with the Jaguars and PFF projected him to carry $6M annually on his next deal. So yeah, signing Scherff could be a better fit for Jalen Hurts, literally and figuratively. However, we just can’t avoid the elephant in the room. The thing is, Sirianni and Co. already have a couple of options for the guard position.

For starters, they traded for Kenyon Green from the Houston Texans. On top of that, Tyler Steen is entering his third season after being drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. But nah, it’s unlikely Nick Sirianni would go ahead either with Green or Steen. All in all, one thing’s certain: Scherff could be a better option for the Eagles if they choose to sign him. Till then, their right guard position is still up in the air.
