On Sunday, history will be made at the Miami Open final. Novak Djokovic, chasing his 100th ATP title, takes on Czech tennis starlet Jakub Mensik, who has stunned the tennis world with his fearless run. If Djokovic wins, he will become the third male player in the Open era to reach the century mark, joining Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). At 37 years and 10 months, he would also become the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion. And the 19-year-old is chasing his first ATP title. The stakes are high, and so is the prize money. Find out the lucrative prize pot!
Mensik’s journey to the final has been nothing short of spectacular. The Czech teenager has defeated three seeded players, including Indian Wells champion Jack Draper, 17th seed Arthur Fils, and 3rd seed Taylor Fritz. Against Fritz, the 19-year-old fired 25 aces and showcased a powerful, well-rounded game. His victory improved his record against Top 10 opponents to an impressive 7-5.
But taking down Djokovic is a different challenge altogether. The Serbian legend, playing in his 60th Masters 1000 final, is chasing his 41st title at this level. If he wins, he will move past Andre Agassi for a record seven Miami Open trophies. The experience gap between the two players is staggering. Djokovic is 37; Mensik is 19. The 18-year, 102-day age difference is the biggest in Masters 1000 final history since the format began in 1990.
And this epic final has a prize money worthy of it. The ATP Masters 1000 event has announced a total purse of $9,193,540 for the 2025 edition, with the singles champion set to take home $1,124,380. But for both Djokovic and Mensik, the title itself is the real prize.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion arrives in Miami after a turbulent start to the year. Aside from his dominant Australian Open quarter-final win over Carlos Alcaraz, his results have been underwhelming. After an early exit in Indian Wells, concerns about Father Time catching up with him began to grow. But a deep run in Miami has put him back in the conversation. And standing across the net is a player he knows well.
Jakub Mensik considers Novak Djokovic his idol, calling him his “tennis inspiration,” but he isn’t here just to admire him. After his semi-final victory over Fritz, the World No.54 made his intentions clear. “For me, it was a dream to play against him in Shanghai. For now, it’s a bit different. I am a better player now and I’m going to enjoy and it’s going to be really exciting,” he said. “Let’s see what’s going to happen Sunday.”
Even Novak Djokovic sees him as a bright young talent and has gone out of his way to help the Czech tennis starlet.
How Novak Djokovic helped Jakub Mensik
The two played at the Shanghai Masters last year, where Jakub Mensik took the opening set in a tiebreak before Djokovic found his groove and secured the win. The Serbian was impressed. “Jakub is somebody that I’ve been following for the last three or four years,” Djokovic said at the time. “We like playing each other, we raise the level when we face each other. We’ve played a lot of practice sets and it’s always fun.”
Talking about their practice sessions, Mensik said, “It was before Wimbledon, so I was able to observe his [Novak Djokovic’s] specific preparation for a Grand Slam, all the little details of everyday life.”
The Czech teenage star has also learned from Djokovic off the court. The Czech was connected with Djokovic’s former physiotherapist, Sasa Jezdic, who now travels with him. He has also partnered with Gotta Tennis, a performance analysis company that has worked with Djokovic. In a conversation with L’Equipe, he opened up on how the 37-year-old legend helped him. “Weight, lunch, recovery… Everything he did, I did. I understood a lot of things there. I observed him, I tried to analyze his functioning, how he warms up, stretches, recovers. Many things we put in place were thanks to him,” he said.
Mensik’s dedication to improving every aspect of his game is paying off, and now he has a shot at a career-defining title.
The Miami final is a battle of generations, of experience versus youth. Djokovic is chasing immortality, Mensik is chasing a dream. One will walk away with the title, but both are playing for history.
