No Bad Blood as Canelo Alvarez Gets Team Floyd Mayweather’s Unwavering Support Against Jake Paul’s Antics

Many claim Canelo Alvarez is ducking David Benavidez, arguing it tarnishes his legacy. Similar accusations arose when he dismissed a fight with Terence Crawford, suggesting a fighter from welterweight doesn’t stand a chance against him. But what about now—when he’s also steering clear of YouTube star Jake Paul? Floyd Mayweather’s uncle has the answer!

In case you’ve been living under a rock, reports recently surfaced that Canelo Alvarez and Jake Paul were in serious talks for a May 3rd showdown. But just as quickly, Canelo took a different route, signing a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. Now, the Mexican superstar is set to defend his titles against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull on the same date.

This will lead to Canelo’s second fight of his deal with the Saudis, which is against Terence Crawford on September 13th in Riyadh. Regardless, during an interview with The Mayweather Channel recently, Jeff Mayweather was asked the unthinkable—does Canelo’s legacy take a hit for not fighting Jake Paul?

“No, I don’t think it [will] tarnish his legacy,” Floyd Mayweather’s uncle said. When pressed further about the topic, Jeff Mayweather added, “I mean because [Canelo’s] going to be fighting legitimate fighters. Jake Paul is an influencer. He’s not a real fighter.” The reporter, for some reason, tried to defend Paul, suggesting Paul has become a real fighter now.

May 3, 2024, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA: Undisputed super middle weight champion SAUL CANELO ALVAREZ 60-2-2-39KOs of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico weighed in at 166.8 lbs while challenger JAIME MUNGUIA 43-0-34KOs of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico weighed 167.4 at the weigh-in for their main event boxing fight for the undisputed super middleweight title tomorrow night on PBC Prime at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Las Vegas USA – ZUMAo117 20240503_zsp_o117_049 Copyright: xMikaelxOnax

However, Jeff Mayweather wasn’t buying any of it. “I’m talking about fighting real fighters… He fought one real fighter, and he lost,” the legendary trainer said. Furthermore, Jeff Mayweather doesn’t seem to think Jake Paul deserves a shot at Canelo Alvarez, pointing out ‘The Problem Child’ isn’t even in the rankings.

“Jake has done nothing at all to be put in the rankings. He’s not ranked, he’s not ranked at all. And if you’re not ranked, legitimately you can’t even fight for a title,” Jeff Mayweather added. Floyd Mayweather’s uncle defending Canelo Alvarez’s legacy adds even more credibility to Canelo’s actions since Canelo and Mayweather competed against each other back in 2013.

It also shows that Mayweather’s corner and Canelo Alvarez don’t have any bad blood since the fight. If you think about it, since Canelo lost the fight to Mayweather, his career has only surged as he became one of the most successful boxers in the game. Nevertheless, Jake Paul doesn’t have to worry, he still has a lot more fight offers.

Dart star calls out Jake Paul for a fight after Canelo Alvarez U-turn

Former rugby player turned darts champion Gerwyn Price has joked that he could take down Jake Paul with just “one punch.” Speaking to talkSPORT, Price dismissed Paul’s boxing credentials, saying, “He’s a YouTuber—he’s not a fighter, is he?” When asked what would happen if they met in the ring, he confidently declared, “I think it would just be one punch, and it would be all over. Out cold. It would be a waste of money for people to tune in.”

Price also claimed he would have a home advantage if the fight happened in Wales. “He’ll never beat me in Wales. Nobody beats me in Wales. He’d probably beat Canelo [if they fought in Mexico], but he’s not beating me, no.” Price, a former PDC World Champion, is set to compete in the Premier League against Nathan Aspinall on February 13.

It appears even Floyd Mayweather’s uncle supports Canelo Alvarez’s decision to not fight Jake Paul. As for whether Canelo’s legacy is getting tarnished by avoiding a fight against Jake Paul, nobody seems to believe that narrative. But what about you? Do you think Canelo’s legacy is tarnished for not fighting Jake Paul?
